We have a lot of ice in south west michigan, probably will be a while before we get power back, sounds like a war zone with all the limbs breaking off. I hadnt started my generator in probably 5 years ,or more, its a 6000 watt 10 HP B&S engine, Same gas, I used some penatrating oil because I didnt have any either and the 2nd pull it was running. I havent had pure gas in many many years, I dont think we have a station near here that does not have ethanol in it.

Hopefully this is not too widespread, I've been through 2 of these 10 years apart, last one '08, power outages were hard to imagine, that last one ruined a lot of young timber on this land, really disappointing after 20-25 years growth to see it all laying on the ground.

Same thing is going on here in central Michigan (Owosso to Flint). Haven't fired up the generator yet because I have geothermal and it takes 12k watts to run my 3500 Honda aint going to cut it.

I have one fireplace stoked and two more to get started. Will worry about the lights when it starts to get dark.

That is nasty ice. Sometimes engines just run. My CJ3B jeep and a 032 chainsaw are like that, they can sit for a long time and start easily. Jim

We had a storm several years ago, not this bad, and the wife took a baseball bat and beat the ice off the trees and we didnt have hardly any damage. I dont know how wide spread this is yet, My Pastor lives 20 miles away and he has power. Church is canceled. I drove a couple miles each way and its the same all over.

Here in Central NY, it's like spring, 60 degrees and rain. The foot of snow we had is gone except for where the snowplows pushed it in piles. My biggest worry was flooding govt. weather has this county on flood watch til 7PM monday night.

Yep,I was gonna snap a few this morning, but it looks the same here as it does there,so no need both of us posting the same thing.
We still have power. In fact,we got a little bit of snow on top if the ice so it isn't as slippery as it was the last two days.

We just went through a ice storm here in N. E. Texas two weeks ago. Lots of trees and power lines were down or broken. Some were out of power for a week or more. Several power companies came from as far away as Florida. There are still tree services working here, even today-Sunday. Hope everything goes good for everyone there and hope you have a Merry Xmas.

Wow. I'm in Michigan also, outside Moscow, about 20 minutes south of Jackson. We didn't get anything like that here. Hope your power is back on sooner than expected.

Anthony

what town are you located in? I'm in Decatur and it isn't nearly that bad ,the trees are iced but not hanging .

i always hate to see that now what are the kids going to do when the batteries in the toys quit ? someplace i saw a story that after storms like this in 9 months hospitals get busy

I am north of you guys and we got snow. Started out a fine slippery snow and them changed to a wet snow. It seems to me like we are getting a lot of rain this winter. I don't remember getting this many ice storms in the winter as we have this year. When I went out to the wood stove this morning there was around 8 inches of new snow.

Here is what we have this morning 30 miles east of Saginaw. Power is still on, so far. Had a run to Brewster Ohio last night. Was 58 and rained like a son of a gun.

I havent had the TV on to see how widepread it is,The neighbor called both towns near us and they are shut down. I am going to use my generator mainly at night, Seeing as we cant get gas. I heat with wood but without a fan running I have to keep it shut down pretty much. So it wont be overly warm. It is sad to see the trees hurt this way, I planted all of these trees. I have a big Elm behind the house and thats hurt to.

That sure doesn't look like it's any fun. We've had two of those way down here in central Alabama and the power was off 7 days in the first one and 10 days in the second one. Not pleasant as we are just not geared for that type of weather. My wife was mighty glad I insisted on putting a nice wood stove in the living room corner (cabinet style, no viewing glass), it came in very handy those years and still does. I live way out in the sticks and we are about the last one's on the line so we get power last.
One thing I have wondered, Is it worse to get major snow or big ice storm?

We got a little lucky here in Northern NY State. Cold weather from our neighbors to the north [Canada] dropped out temp well beloe freezing and turned the rain into sleet and stopped the freezing rain before it caused major damage. It is still like a crystal wonderland outside but no power loss here. I have a pto generator and tractors all stored inside in case I need to make my own electric. We also have wood heat so we can get by for a while.
Hope everyone is warm and dry and healthy.

Ice is a lot worse. We have the equipment, and by we I mean everybody including the road crews,to handle the snow. A few hours after the snow stops, everything is back to normal.

I didn't think about the equipment part making the difference. The only equipment down here is a dump truck full of sand for the icy bridges.

5 inches of new snow up here in Clare, Mi. last night--more coming today---Let it snow..........

You can see on this utility site the band of damage caused across Southern Ontario.

Just north of you in Kingston Ont Canada and we really took a hit this time..Glad our cold helprd you out..Always nice to do your neighbour a good turn LOL

i'm in nw alabama and it was announced in church this morning that local line crews were headed to ny state just south of canada, from there possibly to maine. good luck!

I am near Hastings, North of Battle Creek. The maple that was in the picture lost more limbs, I was cleaning up and a good sized one knocked me around, then later just standing there another smaller one came down and that just pushed me around. My Direct disc got knocked around, I straightened it up and have a 90% signal, but no TV, I wanted to see whats on the news. The last I heard no stations were open, nothing open in the 2 small towns near me.

The past 40 years, every time I've lost power, which has been way too many times, it's because a neighbor's tree falls on the power lines. One time the power surge created cost me a garage door opener, a surge surpressor protecting a dishwasher, and the electronic controls to my gen-air range. After that storm, I put a surge surpressor on the electric meter.

I've spent tens of thousands of dollars having my trees removed or trimmed. None have fallen on power lines or will they.

I will never plant trees that are going to get big, near a power line, near a house, or building.

If I were in charge of the electric compaines, I would send people a bill for their trees bringing down power lines.

We can go to the moon, but we aren't smart enough to keeps trees away from power lines. Go figure.
George

sounds good, however; considering the numbers and length of various electrical and communication lines on poles combined with the height of trees then the landscape would be like a moonscape if all were cut. also consider that there are utility right of ways that protect their and your rights.

I'm just North of Ionia, MI. Much the same.
Luckily I have not lost power. Land line phone is out and my
wireless internet was out for an hour or so, but back on now.

Well I guess you can blame my wife. She forced me to come out here for Christmas with the outlaws. Arrived last week with a nasty head cold, weather has been crappy since we hit the state line....fortunately just got internet service back here about 40 miles east of Lansing. Just reminds me of why I left the state back in '91....and to not come back for another 5 years!

Then charge the owner if his tree damages my property or the power lines. I still stand on my comments, it's crazy plane and simple. Sooner or later the trees are going to cause us all a problem. You don't have to plant trees that will grow taller than the power lines......
