When bench testing, my magneto has good spark when the spark plug wire is plugged directly into the coil cover. When the distributor cap is put on and the wires are hooked to it, there is no spark. Why?

The rotor timing gears (between the rotor shaft and the mag cam shaft)are not meshed correctly. there are marks to align. Jim

don't forget you must use solid core wires not the automotive type with carbon cores.
have seen many tractors with wires taken off of a car engine and that just don't work.

If you pulled these gears they need to be timed on the letter R as your rotor rotates CW. Hal

Just make a mark on the body where the tower is for #1 wire now remove the cap and turn the mag over till the rotor stops there or close the rotor has to be lined up at that mark for the impulse to make it fire. You can turn the mag backwards then turn forwards to where it should stop at that mark. When installing make sure #1 piston is on compression . After putting the mag back on you can turn the engine over and check if the rotor snaps at that position when #1 is on compression.
