Stray Domestic Geese.

A couple of weeks ago a pair of geese came and went. I mentioned them earlier on the site.

Well after the "grab hinie" session they are building a nest under an overturned boat near the pond.

We were wondering what breed they were and surfed the domestic geese pics on the www and only saw one pic with them in it, with a couple of other breeds sonewhere in Australia.

The main body is an irridescent green with white on the outer extremities of the wings. Necks are white and moving up to the head is spotted white and either green or black.

He has a green/black short comb about twice as long as hers. The identifying feature (to me) is the red floppy membrane over the rear of the beak. Looks like a couple of big warts.

His legs/feet are golden and hers brown.

At first, as I reported, I thought they were ugly, but they are very smart critters as geese go.

If you have any idea as to what breed of geese these are I would appreciate your comments.

Thanks,

Mark

Not with this pair sir.

Apparently it is a he and she thing. He is the model "husband". He is a devoted mate. Really a pleasure to watch them go through their routine.

I got some chicken scratch for them and they love it and have the pond to splash in.

As I said earlier she built her nest under a small, overturned boat near the pond. He watches the nest while she takes a break.

Feeling around this house is that animals/fowl/what have you take better care of their families than a lot of homosapiens.

your right just to close to supper.
your also right some animals make better parents then some humans and kids can learn more from watching that pair then the can learn off an ipod

With the large comb on the male i kind of thought a muscovy duck, but never saw one with that coloration. Any chance you can get a pic of them. Most geese do mate for life.

Look anything like this? If so, they are Muscovy DUCKS.

I'd say Muscove ducks too. Let them hatch and when young'uns are mature eat half of em, Colonies here raise em by the thousands and sell at Christmas.
Those two may get you 100 per year.

BINGO. But DUCKS? Naw. These suckers are GEESE if I ever saw one. Wingspan is not quite as long as a "CANADA" Goose, but big none-the-less.

Thanks for the answers all you who contributed.

Tinker from TN nailed it and has a better picture of them than I could take. Got to look real close to tell them apart.

Thanks,

Mark

Wikipedia has quite a write-up on them. Interesting reading. On the "reproduction" paragraphs, she is doing just what is noted. However, the sexes are almost identical with her not being much smaller as noted.

Will be fun watching this new addition to the farm.

Mark,
They sure sound like a Muscovy. They are truly a duck but the males are about as big as a Canadian goose but with a shorter neck, and probably thicker neck too.

I have had a bunch of them for around 10 years. The come in all different colors. Here is a pic of a white one next to my 175 lb. Mastiff to give you an idea of how big they get. The rest are Pekin, Rouens and Indian Runners.

Yes sir they are. We are maybe "prematurely" looking forward to a brood of chicks. Maybe we will wish later we hadn't enticed them to stay....chicken scratch free choice. I enjoy watching them and their mannerisms. Especially like his dedication to the family. A real role model for folks.

Talked to a neighbor around here about them wondering as to their origin. Seems they just drifted in the neighborhood and went from farm to farm till they found what they were looking for. Origin unknown.

Thanks for the pics and your time.
