MF 1105 hydraulic pump noise

Recently bought a MF 1105 that had a noisy front end. The water pump was finished. I replaced that but still have a noisy front end. I believe the enormous radial piston pump on the end of the crankshaft may be cavitating. Hoping it,s that because that pump costs a fortune; as much as what I paid the entire tractor! - 30 F. here three days ago so filters need to be really clean. Trouble is: I cant find the darned filter! Hoping for enlightenment. Query from Quebec.

No one else answered, so here is my 2 cents. My brother and neighbor had an 1100 so the following may or may not help.

There should be a hydraulic unload rod on the floor in front of the seat. Pull it up before starting. This should deactivate the hydraulic pumps.

There is a charge pump in the rear to push oil to front radial. I believe that is where the filter is.

Do you have water in the hydraulic oil?

The front hydraulic pipes crack, I have brazed them back together and the repair held.

Don't stall out going up hill. you will have no brakes.

You got all my knowledge on Massey 11xx hydraulic.

The radial pump in an 1105 can't cavitate. It has no ability to suck, the oil has to be pushed by the charge pump to it. The filter is on the oil cooler circuit, it is a bypass setup and does not see the whole flow. There is a suction screen in the bottom of the transmission case.

Hi
The 1105 doesn't have the pump destroke lever it's the same as an 1135 from what I know. there are 2 filters one is in a big canister behind the front grill ( just above the head lamps) thats a replaceable element.

There is also one under the rear trans towards the front of the draw bar. look under the tractor there is a plate bolted to the casting with a drain plug in. Remove the drain plugs catch the 40 or 50 liters of oil, I drained all the plugs under the trans for new oil. undo ring of small bolts drop plate, be careful its heavy!. there is a suction filter there on the plate. Hopefully it is not full of filings and large bits! you will probably need a new gasket to re fit the plate.
does the tractor have any functions working like pto and multipower if fitted. there are charge and low pressure pumps in the trans. if the charge pumps worn the front pump doesn't get oil feed. Had one apart here a few weeks ago had filings gone through everything.
had to replace trans pumps, top trans cover plate, steering priority valve and front pump. Looks like the steering unit under dash is shot also.
The oil in that trans is probably like toffee treacle in - 30 that might not help either try warming the trans up some how.
Hopefully yours is not as bad as this one was $3000 in parts and still got a steering issue to fix, for the guy. also had to go get $1000 of test meters/gauges and hoses to even start to figure testing the system and the problems.

There is a whole load of tests to diagnose faults in this system you cannot guess whats wrong. 5 little things being slightly wrong can cause 1 big headache. you will need a good service manual or guys that have done this before, with the correct flow meters and things, if warming the oil doesn't help
Good luck
Regards Robert

Hi just another stupid thought here, when you say noise and you think it's the pump. do you have a loud screaching noise like belts slipping under load. Those things are a pig for wearing the motor pulleys, this one I had here does it. New correct belts sit about 1/8th inch below the pulley top due to the wear in the grooves.
try running it briefly with the belts slack,
then see if the noise goes away. you might be lucky and it's not the hydraulics.
Regards Robert

Thanks for the information everyone. My two other tractors I know like the back of my hand. First experience with this Massey series. I,m certain it,s not the belts slipping so I will proceed with a verification or replacement of the filters and oil. Tractor hasn,t been started in over a month so it should be interesting to see what the oil looks like in the bottom of the transmission when I pull the drain plug.
