What mileage do you get in a C60 with a 292 L-6 and 5 speed tranny and two speed rear end?

I had a 292 V-8 in my 1964 Ford heavy F-100. I believe Chevy had a 292 Six about that same time frame. Mileage in the F-100 was about 12-14 loaded or empty. I believe that the Ford 292 in the 64 was a make use of old stock, as many auto parts places did not list the 292 in a 64. Hope this has been helpful. gobble

I had a 1970 with the 292 in it. Ran good, easy to work on. but some times it seem a 327 would have been better for pulling heavy loads.

1962 until 1990.

Had a 1968 Chevy cab over with 1 took the fuel delivery tanks off and put a flatbed on it, slow but dependable, don't remember the fuel milage, back then with a fleet of gassers, continual stop and go driving, I really didn't pay a lot of attention

tried that; didn't work. the V-8 short stroke won't handle hard pulls. The long stroke 6 cyl. would pull the 2 ton Chevy loaded with 65 green oak crossties up out of the pit much easier.

Back when I worked for a JD dealer I hauled a new JD 5020 with axle mount duals 225 miles on a '64 Chevy C60 tilt bed with a 292 and a week later the engine required replacement. I persuaded the dealer to have a 327 installed and what a difference it made in the trucks pulling power.

The 292 won't take the rpm that a 327, 283, 305, 350, etc. will - slower but steady enough. You weren't rapping it too high were you? It's a darned good [u:2006f62092]TRUCK[/u:2006f62092] motor as is Ford's 300 I6. My 2¢

All I was trying to do is get that 16,000 + # load back home. 292 is a good engine but it won't pull with a 327. This particular 292 would go over 30,000 miles without an overhaul.
