Ford in tank fuel pumps

Can I hook 12 v directly to my fuel pump to check it? I Was wondering if it went through a transformer maybe to drop the voltage, or is it just straight 12v. Stan

Hooking 12 volts direct to it is good trouble shooting. It allows you to eliminate wiring and controls and test the pump only.

"It"s a straight 12V"

GOTTA be careful with a "one-size-fits-all reply like that!

He didn"t state WHAT Ford it was... newer ones have returnless fuel systems and the voltage/power to the pump is modulated by an electronic box called a "fuel pump driver".

PROBABLY OK to give the fuel pump full 12 Volts for a SHORT time, but be aware that things are getting MORE complicated all the time.

HOPEFULLY someone with more experience on those systems than I will chime in!
SOME info

Bob's answer is important. DC does not work in a transformer. Pulsed DC will, and AC will, but DC will not induce output in the windings. Most are 12v. Jim
