Massey Ferguson TE20 for Acreage

Hi,

We have just purchased 15 acres (90% flat paddock, no trees). We need to get a tractor for slashing duties and wanted to see if a Massey Ferguson TE20 would be up to the task? If not would we need to start looking at MF 135's for this size of block?

Thanks

It would be up to the task horsepower wise if using it with a 5 ft mower met your time requirements to complete the task of mowing. The down side of the TE/TO-20"s are the lack of live hydraulics. The pto must be engaged to lift the mower because it drives the three point hitch hydraulic pump. That means when you lift the cutter the blade is driven.

I have a TO-30 with the same issue. I mow with our Ford 4610. I ahve use dthe TO-30 but I"m not comfortable using it to mow. I have a 6 foot rotary cutter that weighsin at ~750 and when I lift the mower, the front end gets light. And I don"t like lifting it with the PTO running but have no other choice. So I use the Ford.

Personally, I"d prefer the MF135. With live hydraulics and two stage clutch it"s a better set up.

Opinions are like belly buttons-everybodys has one.

If you put a bush hog on the TE20, be sure to also put an over-running PTO coupler. That way, when you push in the tractor clutch, the momentum of the bush hog turning doesn't keep turning the transmission and push you into the tree, ditch, or pond!! (Same consideration for any tractor with transmission driven PTO) The overrunning coupler is designed to "free wheel" smoothly when implement exceeds tractor's speed. They're available in both 1 3/8 and 1 1/8 female spline with an output/male spline size of the (now) standard 1 3/8"

I'd hold out for a 35 deluxe, 65, 135 or a 165. That's enough tractor that you'll be able to do more later if you desire without having to trade horses. This will also be enough tractor to run a decent loader should you decide you need one later on.

Nieghbour is a retired mechanic who dabbles in tractor repairs a bit.He bought our 35 and was telling me he was pleasantly surprised at the prices of parts compared to a TEA20 he had worked on previous. He was of the opinion the Agco was way out of line on parts for the 20.You might want to check that out for yourself before you buy.
