Ot Cattle acidosis

Does anyone haves quick cure for acidosis in 400-500 bound calfs. I lost one calf yesterday, found one down yesterday. She could not get up. I called vet, she came out, charged me $250 and decided it was parasites. She double dosed calf B that was down.

I had noticed earlier this week the lot did not seem to be gaining weight like they should.

I talked later in today with a neighbor who received the balance of a load of feed from the mill on the same truck I did. They lost a cow also this week. They also noticed some bloodied discharge. They immediately pulled the feed and put the cows on strictly hay. Their cows cleared up.

To keep this tractor related I use John Deere tractor, a Lely mower and a Hesston baler to bale hay for the cows

I was wondering the same. I had a calf (200lbs) get hung by his leg in a hay feeder yesterday. I got him up last night but he fell when he tried to walk. Went to get him up this moring and the bone was broke clean threw right above the hoof. Hated to put him down.

It's similiar to crypto and caused by protozoa. They'll dehydrate quick,, and fluid loss can kill them quickly. Antibiotics don't work too well, either. Peptobismol or Kaopectate may give them enough relief to start to heal again and survive, but it's a gut infection and causes scours. Get them into a dry pen with mama if possible, get them warm and feed them with a tube if you have to. And call the vet....

Infection in the gut.You better study up on it if you have any calves.Called bloody scours.Used to keep a dozen Herefords had to do a lot of doctoring.Theres still a bottle of penicillin in the fridge.Glad those days are past.

If it's acidosis, there is no cure. It's a death sentence. Acid displaces the oxygen in the blood and they die just like they had drowned and lacked oxygen.

Should have put a cast on it. We had one like that a couple of years ago. Hobbled around for I think seven weeks before we cut the cast off. A week later couldn't tell it had ever been broke.

You sure on that definition of acidosis? I have dealt with it in several animals that were getting grain rich diets and if the diet is changed it is easily reversible. Should never be a death sentence if you pay attention to the animal and remove what is causing the excessive rumen acidification. Bad feet and rumen ulcers may be the long term effect of acidosis but it sure isn't a death sentence if a Guy pays attention. Obviously, bloat on the other hand can happen quick enough to be terminal.

Neighbor had one with broken leg, some got stepped on . After cast came off looked normal a month later.

Yep, cows wernt designed to eat grain, just forage , hay, and grass. I can't understand why anyone would throw money at grain for a cow? I don't even care to feed the horses grain, but that's what we've done for 23 years and they like it! Lol

Acidosis is genrally caused by too high energy content in rations (excessive grain).Cut back on the grain and feed more hay.

I've had calves get in to grain twice and had Sterner Vet Clinic out here for them. They couldn't do a thing about it. They died just as if they'd suffocated. Let's not confuse acidosis with either ketoacidosis or ketosis. The symptoms and cause are basically the same, but ketoacidosis and ketosis pretty much just cause weight loss.

This is a commercial feed. I received 3 tons, neighbor received 21 tons. I have been hand feeding approximately 60 pounds a day to 12 head. This is about 1% per day. They have hay beside them all the time. The calves seem to be loosing weight.

I splinted a similar sized calf's leg with a piece of PVC pipe a few years ago. Set the bone, bandage it, cut appropriately sized PVC pipe in half to make a 2 piece splint, wrap with hoof wrap and keep tabs on it. Bandage should be changed accordingly. The calf was fine after about month and a half. When it healed it was just slightly larger than the other legs, probably because of scar tissue, but all in all no major problems.

We add baking soda to the milk cows ration to keep the ph happy.
If each is getting 5 lbs a day that is over half of total daily feed intake.
Anytime you introduce them to a new ration you have to start low and work them up to the amount you want them to get, give there gut time to adjust.
