We ran 65 calves through the chute today, castrated, nnalert and poured them. The biggest one weighed 780 pounds. Only got kicked by one,but he got me right in the side of the leg twice. Snowing to beat the band out there, but it was dry enough in the barn. It still takes more and more out of me every year though.

i would like to keep around five or ten cows around got plenty of pasture, that i just mow every year, but at 57 yrs old seems like not a good idea to start raising a few cows.guess i would mostly enjoy looking out across the field and see a few head of cows.wifes four horses are getting old, wont be sround much longer.just kickin the idea around

When I was younger ,I'd see guy's with nice cow herds sell out when they start pushing 60.Never could figure that out. Now I'm pushing 60& I understand.Calving in a blizzard is for the younger ones.
Something I'm looking into is calving in May & June.Way less work, less feed bill and 6 weight calves ready for for grass in April are very valuable. Sounds like a retirement plan I could live with for another decade or more.

Keep an eye on the leg for complications. Then have a couple of adult beverages, eat supper, and call it a day. Been snowing here since 1:30am, got about 6", and will last at least until midnight. Finally broke out the snow blade and put it on, maybe plow out tomorrow after church.

I'll turn 60 in Feb. and have been expanding hurd. Had 50 last year and with drought was glad I didnt have more. Sold some older ones and saved back some hieffers. Really like spending time with them. more time with them the friendlier they are. Herferd/Angus several let me scratch their ears. Make my own hay and do all the doctoring my self. If I didnt have them I wouldnt have a reason to get up in the morning.

Our heifers cave in April-May and the rest calve May-June. Once the heifers get theirs on the ground it"s pretty much easy sailing. Only trouble is I am real good at finding new twins once we get done planting and start spraying thistles, think it was 4 sets in 2 weeks my first summer out here, plus a set with 1 still-born.

Buy some light weight calves in the spring and run them through the summer. Sell in the fall.

No cattle to fight through the winter and cheap weight gain on the cattle.
