OT It's hard to understand some people

The company I work for has had a very good year, we have worked lots of overtime and surpassed company profit expectations by a long shot. Yesterday the company announced our profit sharing. Full time employees get 85 hours pay, term employees get $200 and temps get $100. There were at least 6 people whining that they should have gotten more money( full time employees). What the ?? The company didn't have to give us a dime and these people are B---hing they didn't get enough. Everyone else was quite happy with the news. Some people don't realize how good they have it. Sad part, we got our checks today, Gov't withheld over $500 on my check, but hey, life is good. Chris

Just because he sucked it up no reason you won't get it or a lot of it back. Bonus checks are vulnerable to impulsive taxation. In short, the accountant plugs the amount and the pay period into the tax calculation and the answer is computed as if your annual pay was at that rate. So you get stiffed at a high tax rate.

However, when you do your taxes for the year you pay for your bracket and the extra will come back to you.

We have had a downer year at our place and us employees all know that. Today the president came around and handed us our weekly paycheck plus a 20hr bonus. We are extremely grateful. The six at your business they should be happy they even have a job.

In the old days it was called shunning. You and fellow employees need to bust these idiots butts really good! Wake them up alittle!

Human nature I guess.
When I was in the service, over the holidays we would get some
time off, but to make sure everyone was healthy and alive the
guys who were not on vacation had to come in first thing in the
morning, show their face at "muster" and then go home.
Every one of them pitched a fit. "If we're only going to be here a
few minutes it doesn't make sense to come in at all!"
I told my guys they were welcome to stay all day if they liked, but
if they didn't want to stay they should just shut up and go home.
They all went home of course.

No doubt the whiners were the least productive employees, too.
They should try working for themselves...

Chris,
We've been slow this year so I'm not expecting a very big production bonus this year - Just hope they keep the healthcare plan going for a little bit longer!
Jim

PS: Just a couple of calenders so far - But J&S Farms is the best right now. MIGHT be some Tractor calenders later?

I am an owner who gives nice bonus checks on good years its nice hear from someone like you who is grateful. I have found that the more years in a row that someone gets a big bonus the more they expect it and aren't grateful. Then you have an off year with no bonuses and guys get all mad like they got ripped off... We had a bad year, what more can I say...

Mike:

They ought to be grateful that they even HAVE a job in this tough economy. There are a lot of us that took early retirements because there was no work available in our trades.

my boss handed out bonus today also paid out good for all and he gave them in american express gift cards no tax had to be paid

Thanks for the reply's, it's just hard to understand some people. I should have left out the part about the withholding, just a jab at the gov't want more all the time, I apologize for the remark. I'll just have to buy a few more inputs for next year so I can get it back. I have been around going on 62 years and learned a long time ago, the people who have to tell everyone how hard they work all the time usually do the least and the ones who say nothing do their jobs and some extra when needed. Y'all have a good night. Chris

I started a new job last January with a company that had two plants, that company sold both plants to one of our competitors in June. In late July our new owners announced they would be taking our plant down for Renovations in August with production resuming in November, they also announced they would be closing our sister plant for good in the last quarter of the year and moving their equipment (and production) to our plant. On the bright side they also announced they would pay the companies' share of health and dental insurance for any employee through the layoff and that any current employee (August) that was still employed by the company on December 13 would receive a $1,000 dollar bonus. This week I heard a lot of weeping and gnashing of teeth over the $350 dollars Uncle sam and the governor took from their bonus, I asked they remember this next election when they vote. I am in maintenance and they kept our department pretty much fully staffed during the shut down, one guy went to 1/2 time and our lead took a voluntary layoff for the month of September. The last week all the MRO supplies from our sister plant started showing up on my doorstep. Makes me wonder- we're now getting a lot of stuff from our sister plant we were told we couldn't have (by the former owners),our plant was always kinda treated like the red headed step child, we couldn't have squat and everything we did was not good enough if not entirely wrong. Our new owners are the largest in our business (egg products) and after about 30 days of ownership they decided we were the ones with a future, not our sister who was the corporate favorites of the last owners. Maybe if our former corporate office was able to make rational and objective observations they'd be around for this Christmas.

When I was in high school 1989, I worked for a greenhouse moving plants, construction/maintenance of the property and vehicles. Worked from 4 pm till the work was done sometimes 10pm and weekends putting in 50-60 hours a week. Boss handed out Xmas money to everybody and not everybody got the same. When I opened it I received $20. Seen him and a supervisor later that evening talking in the office, walked in and laid my card on his desk and walked out. Next day the super asked whats up with the $20, said if thats all I'm worth keep it. Same super would have me move the same amount of plants afterschool that the full time 2-3 workers would do all day. I earned my keep and kept the place going. Boss's son was sad to see me leave, said repairs were done before he even knew something was broke and actually kept 40-50 workers(women) talking and got along with all of them. I learned alot at that job 8 years and starting at $2.85/hr. chris

I"ve never understood employees biiitching about a Christmas bonus! Just like getting a "lousy" Christmas gift and needing to exchange it. Be grateful for whatever you get! You agreed to work for a given wage....the boss owes you nothing more. Years ago I worked my way through college at some grunt jobs.....the bellyachers who complained at Christmas time were the least productive workers. I"ll bet they"re no better off now.

i guess i feel jipped i have never worked for a company that gave out a bonus. i have mainly worked for bigger companys. the bigger the company the less personalable they are. have to keep share holders happy.

Where I work the manager gives everyone a $25 gift card to Schnucks. No complaints there.

Then the company has a safety incentive. October 2014 will mark 10 years without a lost time claim. Our safety bonus for next year will be $1100.00 They give it in a gift (mastercard) card so no taxes are taken out. I found out a way to link it to my paypal account and transfer it to my bank account where I can draw interest from it. transferring it to the bank cost me 3% of what I transfer but it was worth it. I did this because if we don't use our gift card the bank that issued it will charge a non-use fee for not using it. All and All there are no complainers. I hate to see the person who gets hurt and ruins the track record. Joke around the plant is if any one gets hurt or ruins the $1100 bonus will get hurt from everyone else when he or she returns to work...LOL

The company that I worked for would give us our unused vacation pay at Christmas. But they would issue two checks and that made the tax much less.

Royse: All the units I was in, 74-96 did half days over the Christmas season. 0600 PT, 0830 work call formation. Then busy stuff till 1100 (to include playing tactical board games). One unit even went so far as to do 1/2 days with every other day off. I never heard anyone complain. Back then our duty day in reality was from 0530 to EOM (for those who don't know "end of mission"), generally 1730 or later. Last couple of years I was in they started "predictable duty days". You would be released at 1700. First day that was in effect our 1SG did his normal 1700 formation. The commanding general was out to see if his orders were being followed (would be released no later than 1700). He caught the ISG forming us up at 1700. We never worked late again.

Had the same situation when I was in college. I worked for a prominent machine tool manufacturer 4 hours a day on a scholarship/work study program. I put out as much product in 4 hours as most of the full timers did in a day. Christmas bonus was a big deal back them...get a big check, party, and lots of fun. Guys with 10 years or more would clear over $3000. I never got a thing. My supervisor felt bad and went to bat for me. They gave me a $20 check....said part timers couldn't participate in the bonus program......at least the next year I knew what to expect. I worked the different departments throughout college and worked my way into the engineering department. Would probably still be there if the Taiwanese hadn't copied our machines and put us out of business.

I used to turn a wrench at a dealer, was paid commision and considered myself pretty darn good at it. The company I worked for was very prosperous, I made a bunch of money and made them a heck of a lot more. Saying that I never saw more than a $50 before taxes bonus for x-mas, nothing else through the year either. Hey I'll take anything I can get but I would almost rather have nothing at all than to get that. To me its almost as degrading as leaving a little loose change on the table for a tip.

Always been a farmer, never got paid by the hour in my life.

One time a good friend of mine was complaining, he only got a 10 cent raise.

Same week, my girlfriend (now wife) was complaining she only got a 4 cent raise.

This was a bad year in farming, and I was surrounded by folks getting positive incomes and they were complaining...

I think I asked both of them for years if they had any more bad news when I saw them,.,.,

I realize those were tiny raises, but it was back a ways when there was lots of bad ecconomic news, not getting a pink slip was a good day back then.....

Only had one good job.I went to work for my self after that.Figured that if I was going to be poor it would be my fault.

I do some estimating work for a contractor on an as needed basis. Last year he gave me $500.00 at Christmas. I didn't expect anything. sure was grateful. People who complain about their employer are free to find another job or start their own company. Part of the entitlement culture. Most of us have nothing invested in a company. If they have a bad year they don't ask for the employees to contribute.

My wife works for a packaging co. that other than the county itself is the only other large supplyer of jobs in the area , this is a family run operation . Several yrs. ago they had put up a big new building and relocated just outside of town and there bottom line was not the best that yr. but did supply more jobs for the area . Not alot of extra money for everyone they gave out a big ham to everyone . Alot of the folks were mad all they got was a ham and drove by the owners house and through them in his yard . We ate ours , glad to have it , tasted great and saved several $$ for our christmas diner .

There was a plant in Dallas Texas years ago. Making a small profit but trying real hard to stay in business. Workers decided to go union. Owner told them he could not afford they increase in pay at this time.Go union and I will shut the plant down. Union leader said he was bluffing. They went union on Friday night. Saturday morning he closed the plant.

People should be glad for what they have.

(quoted from post at 21:07:32 12/13/13) I'm self-employed. My boss is a real Azz. :>)

Same here and there are 3 employees, me, ,myself and I. The boss is me and he can't the others to carry their load. We never get a bonus, get paid over time or paid vacation. No company paid health plan or retirement. It's the best job I ever had.

Just maybe you were not as good as you thought you were.

I have worked for the same company for 29 years. We get profit sharing which is about 2500 a year, if we hit certain goals it is another 100 a month, matching 401k, and free uniform allowance. I can't complain, its alot nicer than the hog farm I managed before this job.

Back in 58 I think I got 30 bucks for a bonus, maybe it was 20, but anyway, I though I had died and gone to heaven.
