3020 4230 engine swap Started yesterday

My brother and I usually do a tractor project during the Christmas holidays as work is almost always slow in December. We started the engine swap yesterday 4230 engine into a 3020 by taking the engine out of the 4230.There is also a picture of our 4020 parts tractor. Anyone need some 4230 parts? Would like to trade for a decent 4020 hood. The one we have is rough if I have to I'll stretch the 3020 hood.I don't know if we will get much done today as we have some jobs to look at.

What was wrong with the 4230? For me I'd rather have an operating 4230 than a 6 cyl 3020 but each to their own ideas.

I will third what TxJim said. The wet clutch and PTO setup on the JD 4230 is far better than the dry clutch on the JD 3020.

IF RBnSC tries to use the extra horsepower that the JD 4230 engine produces he will find out real quick about how marginal the clutch on a JD 3020 is.

He will have a "different" tractor when he is done.

I would like to be able to find the "cheap" donor tractors RBnSC seems to be able to find. I know they are around in the south as several of the local salvage yards around me buy them all of the time and haul them back up here for the used parts.

i agree with jd seller didn't look to be too bad a tractor at all but good luck with the project it'll definitely be different

Not sure If I see an advantage here. I always thought the diesel engine in a 3020 was the only good part of a 3020. Wouldn't the 4320 be a better tractor? Why not fix it up? Hey just a thought, best o' luck to ya.

Dear friends,
I know what you are saying and there are a number of
different circumstances that bring about this swap.
First this tractor has hydraulic problems that the
previous owner tried to fix and finally gave up on.
We have had two 4430s that had similar problems that
we could not get fixed. We have 5 other 20 series
tractors and have had many more over the years and
have learned how to work on them. We have very
little money in the two of them. Only need a good
hood.
