found a fence row project engine is stuck whats the best way to free the engine and how big a pain is it

Depends on how long it sat, covered or uncovered exhaust? gas or diesel? if gas, pull the plugs, they will till you how much water has been there. I've had a few that I soaked and they came loose and ran, but smoked. A few others I soaked for months, only to end up tearing it down and finding a busted cylinder.

Save yourself a lot of grief, tear it down. Even if you get it to turn, the rings will be stuck to the pistons.

if its been sitting 15 years uncovered your probably better off just pulling it down, there is a chance it can be soaked in atf for a few weeks and make it free up but after that time odds are against it , and as already mentioned if you did manage to get it to turn the rings will be stuck, hopefully this is a tractor with sleeves if its a pickup or car it might be better to just opt for at least a short block and go from there

Take off the head and pour boiling molasses into the bores. You may laugh but my neighbour had an old gas stationary engine that sat for years outside in our wet climate with the bore full of water. He tried every solution he could think of, then he discussed it with me one day. I gave him some molasses that we feed to the cows in a paint tin and in about 3/4 hour he was back with the piston in his hand! An old mechanic told me this trick years ago....in fact he said to set something soft under the bore before hitting the piston in case it got damaged coming out so fast!.....Go to Utube and watch car panel cleaning with molasses....cleans it better than a sand blaster!

never tried that one, do you have to clean it up after you pour it in the engine? what does that stuff do when it cools down? i would be worried about molassas sticking in the oil passages in the engine

If its been sitting long just tear it down rings will be stuck and walls messed up no snake oil stuff will make new parts.

tbish, I say tear down and burn out!,,As other have said too many varibles to give a definite answer. Judging from your post it is an engine alone, So get it on and engine Stand, Start on top side, Tear down to block. Roll over pull pan, Rods and mains caps Lift out crank!
Roll back over,
Stop!
Clear work area of Flammables.
NOW, one cylinder at a time, Start with one that has the most volume! fill with Dsl, add a splash of gasoline, set it on fire, Now sit down and drink a cup of coffer or two, when fire goes out take a Wood block and 4 lb hammer and drive out! As the volume of the cylinder goes down the burn time is reduced so multiple burns maybe necessary.
This procedure is repeated on all cylinders till all are out, I have sen guys get engines completely tore down in one afternoon. This method is really good if you are trying
to save pistons, rings, cylinders.
Hope this helps.

We need to know what tractor.Piston removal kinda depends upon if either: wet sleeve, dry sleeve,or 'sleeveless'.Like said.Tear it down.Open that long it's gonna be ugly.Even IF you get it to free up,the cyl walls will be rusty/pitted,cylinders themselves will be full of 'crap',rings stuck to pistons, valves stuck/rusted.....At the very minimum, pull the head and look.

Uncovered as in the exhaust was open to rain getting in your not likely to free it up with out a total rebuild. If the exhaust is covered and no water in the cylinders you stand a fair chance of freeing it up by filling the cylinders with ATF and also pouring ATF down the exhaust and let it sit
