for starters I am a big guy 6'2" 260 lbs with a very stiff neck and a screwed up knee. I can hardly get in and out of my wifes buick lucerne. most pickups okay but thinking of maybe trading car. Any suggestions?

I used to be your size until I got old, shrank in height and gained some more weight. I recently got a Toyota Sienna (minivan)because it was the easiest for me to get into and out of.

great question. at age 66, 6'3" and 210 lbs. with limited mobility i traded down from a full size gmc to a tacoma. gmc difficult to get in cab and bed due to height off ground but had a lot of interior space. gmc extended cab had blind spots to the side toward the rear and length made it difficult in parking lots. so tacoma easier to access cab and bed, easier to see out of and better in tight spaces. less room in cab even though it is a 4 door. overall suits me better. now to answer your question; the ford crown victoras and the old chevy impalas probably built for the older generation at the time.

Small suv, ford escape easy to get in and out. We have one with the four banger. It will get 28 mpg on a long trip, not bad for a four wheel drive.

We just bought an 2014 escape. For a guy your size it will feel dmall. We got it for the wife for the same reason, she has trouble getting in cars. She loves it cause she can just slide in. For somone your size you would want the edge in a ford.

Wife had a Chrysler PT Cruiser. It was the easiest car to get in and out of we have had in years. Current Jeep Compass 4WD is nearly as good, very easy compared to any car we've had, and gets good mileage.

For me the easiest have been the Dodge Caravan, have had 4 with the newest a 1998, don't know what the newer ones would be like. Am only about 5'6' and 200# but with bad legs and back. Wife says it is also easier than our Buick. Next vehical we look for will be anouther van. And the Ford Windstar was hard to get in and out of.

I had a friend who had an old Chrysler Imperial, maybe a 57 or 58. It had large front seats that swung out when the door opened. Set down on the seat and it pivoted back in. I think Olds Cutlasses had that option in the 70's sometime. I remember seeing one but never tried it.

Dodge Caravan or Chrysler Town an country! I slide my wife in an wwith seat in floor on Chrysler just put wheel chair in behind her front seat.If i need to haul passengers it is easy to put seat in place an than haul wheel chair in rear behind all seats.

I had the same problem. Got a Scion xb and find it easy to get in and out, plenty of headroom and legroom too.

Dr. told me 10 years ago get rid of the caddy, get a pickup or SUV. Getting down in a car isn't a good think for my back. You need a vehicle with a chair like seats. I once had a dodge grand caravan which is a good choice if it fits you. My son is about your size. My buick Rendezvous is too small for him but it fits me perfectly. My back likes the ride and the power seats. I also get good milage with the buick and unlike the caddy it uses 87 octane. I also have a full size GMC with michelins for a good ride.

My bought my 2005 buick new, it has 4 wheel independent suspension, front wheel drive.

GM has improved on the Buick and it has a bigger sister. Can't remember what they call it. When my buick dealer is servicing my car or truck, they take me home and pick me up in the newer version. If I ever need a new car, I would check it out.

Caravan/Town & Country
Lots of room good power and my 2005 gets 21/22 MPG driving back and forth to work.

I'm about your size, and when I'm on the job I'm in and out of a vehicle a dozen or more times a day.

I was driving a '99 Olds 88 and had a problem with my left hip being sore last fall, probably caused by getting in and out of the car so often.

I never did find another passenger car that was any easier to get in and out of, so I wound up buying an '05 Dodge Grand Caravan. I lost bit of gas mileage in the change, but the Dodge is so much easier to get in and out of that it's worth it.

My wife is driving an '07 Chrysler T&C, so maybe that's why it was so easy for me to get hooked on the Grand Caravan.

We have an Escalade, very easy for my wife to get in and out of, also have a Buick Enclave, seats are smaller, harder to get out than the Escalade but as easy to get into.

Have a friend in similar situation as yours, a big guy with a bad knee. He always prefers the minivans, first a VW, then Ford Winstar and now a Honda. He did have a 94 Camry which he says was fantastic, but found the newer ones weren't as good. The vans are roomy enough but not too high like large vans, pickups. I find my brother's Acadia is a bit high and really benefits from it's added side steps.

Wow. Pa had that same car. His was turquoise, 4-door.I was young, 5th grade at the time so don't know about getting in and out. Didn't pay any attention but weren't they some car? Quiet inside and ride like a dream.

My dad was 6' 1" at about 260. Chrysler/Dodge minivan
was the easiest for him. Not bad on gas either.
He said it slowed his dating some though. He was 72. RIP

I have my 1964 Ford Gallaxy XL500 convertable! I found my old Dodge caravan was a snap. Then bought a used 1996 Ford Explorer 2Dr sport. This is tall enough to allow me at 6'1" to get in and out fine. The only funny thing is when I walk a lot at the flea market or the fair or such I have to sit sideways on the seat a few seconds and "shrink a little" till my head will clear???? Don't know why but it is.

skip, I am big too, 6'0" and 250 cars with a easy in are a tough find IMO due to the downsizing of all cars. Here goes on my pics.. As always Fords F-Series, Expedition, Edge, Old Crown Vics, Mercury Grand Marquis
We have The F-Series Trucks, Expedition, and My daily driver an Edge. Hope this helps.

Wife is messed up bad with arthritis.Being 5"2" and 360 lbs don"t help but comes partly from being unable to move much. She drives a Dodge Caliber but can"t get into my Dakota 4X4.Ford Focus worked well for her too.I priced a new Jeep and was surprised when she jumped right in.

Skip,

My suggestion is go take a look at them, test them out. Here is why. I'm 6'2" about 300. My company retired my full sized Chevy van and put me into one of their new fleet of Ford micro vans that are made in England...for a short while. I think they call them Transits. You see them all over the road. The plan was to save gas, but since they are so small, you have to make two and three trips to haul the parts of one trip in a full sized van, wasting far more gas. The point is, that with my heighth and weight, that little van was killing me. In all of my 50+ years, my body had never been contorted like that for extended periods of time, since my job takes me all over the place. It sat lower to the ground, and since the seat was so low to the floor and angled straight up in the back due to lack of cab room, my legs were stuck out with no support like I was driving an Indy race car, which is fine for the short Indy race car drivers, not a guy that's 6'2" tall. By the end of the day, I'd get out and walk around like a hunch back until I'd work my way out of it, and it got worse every day for the three or so months that I had that...imported ice cream truck that's smaller than an ice cream truck. My job requires me carrying and using 6', 8', 10', and 12' step ladders and a 28' extension ladder. The accountant that got the fleet of English micro-mini ice cream trucks never considered that. Now I'm back in a 3500 series full sized Chevy, and can not only do my job in one round instead of three go backs, I can walk straight at the end of the day, not hunched over and stuff.

Everyone here can give you our opinion, but the best thing to do is go try one out. Nothing like buying something, then finding out that it really doesn't meet your needs, and then what? Go test the car. Sit in the seat, move the seat forward and backwards, up and down, move the steering wheel up and down, get in and out. Go take a look, maybe on a Sunday when dealers are closed and you can't be bothered, get an idea, and then go approach...

Good luck.

Mark

Go to the dealership and do a seat test on every model they have. I tried all of the Toyota models to see which fit my body the best. Winners were Tundra, Tacoma, Highlander, Sienna, Avalon & Camry. Did not like the Venza & Corolla seats.

Get power seats if available as height is adjustable to get your legs in a comfortable position. I had a Ford Tempo once without power seats; if I drove 100 miles in that it would make my hip ache really bad for days. For me, the seat has to get up to standard height for a chair (about 18 inches from the floor).

The power seat in the Camry will raise just a bit more than the seat in the Tundra, which makes for a comfortable drive for me.

Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible! The BIG doors on a two door body make ALL the difference! Seating position is very upright also. AND you get to drive in a ragtop to boot! We love ours!

Wife's Honda Odessay van has electric seats with the switch right beside the door, shehas the seat all the way up, I just reach in and press swuitches and move the seat all the way back and down.

My wife is disabled with her back. She changed from full sized wagons to Chrysler town & country because she could no longer get out of the low seats in the cars they make today.

Swmbo and I both agree as we age we want a vehicle that the seat is level with your seat as you get in and out. A suicidal 2 pt 150lb buck totalled our Chrysler Town & Country the last Sunday in Oct. Since Nationwide (run and hide!) was being so obnoxious about our claim, I bought an older Saturn while the claim process was going on. After a ride in our "new" car, she wanted her old minivan back! They are great for trips, groceries, garage sales, and many errands. We will vote for the Chrysler minivan like it seems most people on this little survey.

One person mentioned scion xb. Also make sure you look at Nisson Cube.
Wife has one and she cares for elderly and so far they seem to like it the best. Also a plus her mileage readout shows 30 to 32 mpg.
Wifes mom is a little person and she also likes it. The seat will go up and down like a jack.

I'm about 6'5" with knee and back problems so I know what you are going through.

What do you need out of your wife's vehicle? If it's just a grocery getter for her and you seldom ride in it spending extra money so you can get in and out may really be a waste. Is mileage a big concern? Does she drive it everyday to work? There is a lot of info that you didn't put in there. Because of my knees and back we went from a Ford LTD to a Town Car, to a Explorer to a Chevy Suburban. The last has been the best but it only gets 18 MPG. We are OK with that and are looking to replace it, it's got about 306,000 miles on it and it's about time. Going for another Suburban. We haul feed, pull wagons and implements with it plus grand kids.

Rick

My Son has a Scion XB also and I was suprised as to how easy it is to get in and out of,good milage and driveability too.

Hey! How about this little guy looks like its made for the little fat guy. Giggle.

I found that the General Motors cars have little to no headroom and you really feel cramped in one. Ford and Chysler have enough to wear my Stetson.
But like they say just try them all until you find one that fits you and your needs.

At just over six feet I have never found a vehicle that lacked head room for me, but I find most cars are just too close to the ground. It is a long way down to the seat and quite a climb up to get back on your feet. My 80s GM pickup or S Blazer is just the right height. It does not take much height to improve accessibility, ease of entry and exit. Best to try them all out til one feels right.

My mil is 90 and drives a Windstar and she likes the ease of entry/exit. She has artificial hip and has to help her leg in and out of car. She only drives in daytime and goes to 4 places Walmart, beauty shop, church, gas station.
On another note my daughter and sil bought a used cop car for him to commute in. It's a 05 crown vic with lots of room. The car had only65k miles and complete svc record. It was black and white but he had it painted by auto body class solid black and had the spotlight removed. It rides great with lots of room. It wasn't a patrol car but driven by a Lieutenant.

At 6'4" most cars don't fit me except my wife's Ford 500. The Taurus's that came after that based on the same body style should work also. And of course there was the Mercury version of that. My Silverado fits the best but does not have the mileage of the Ford 500. Paul

(quoted from post at 18:33:24 12/07/13) for starters I am a big guy 6'2" 260 lbs with a very stiff neck and a screwed up knee. I can hardly get in and out of my wifes buick lucerne. most pickups okay but thinking of maybe trading car. Any suggestions?

Forget the passenger cars and small SUVs. Go for something like a 4 door Silverado. You'll never be sorry, and your wife will absolutely love it. I am 6 foot, with the same problems as you. I even had problems getting in and out of the wifes 2008 Chevy Equinox, so we traded it for a 2012 Silverado. Neither of us has ever been sorry we did that. Surprisingly, the fuel mileage for the Silverado is about the same as the Equinox.

(quoted from post at 19:02:42 12/07/13) Small suv, ford escape easy to get in and out. We have one with the four banger. It will get 28 mpg on a long trip, not bad for a four wheel drive.

If you get the escape you'll need the seat all the way back to get in or out.Good car otherwise.

I'm 6'2" and my wife is 5'. My wife isn't the most mobile. We have a 2008 Ford Taurus and love it. It is much easier to get in and out of it. When I get in other people's car, it is like I am crawling in and out of a hole. My 88 and 84 year old parents would also prefer to ride in my car than their Chrysler minivan. Also easier for them to get in and out.

im 6'4 and the wife and daughter tend to go thru cars, we wont go into that... i havent found a car i am comfortable in for a long trip since the mid 80's and that was a cadillac, the wifes lastes is a monte carlo ss, 300hp and a ball to drive, but only for a short distance then its cramped, the daughters subaru is better for room, but the steering wheel wont rotate up far enough , an full size pickup is far more comfortable and a half ton rides like a car

when my back surgery I bought a 2005 Ford 500 awd really easy to get in out of they have put the Taurus badge on them since 2008. Sits much higher than a reg car bought in 2008 still have it been pretty reliable.

I have the same problem...some days worse than others. I retired from the Army after 23 years...so some things hurt.
I have a Ford Edge that does just fine by me. I am 6' 4" and about 215.
