You know it's cold when

You unplug the tractor and start it to do chores and after running for 10 minutes the temp gauge is still lower than it was before you started it. It makes me feel better when the tractor exhaust blows white just like a car - then I know it really is cold and I am not being a wimp. The heat pump in this old house hasn't shut off since before 2:30 at least. Boy oh boy.

We aren't negative yet, but after a while it just doesn't matter. Sort of like the difference between 100 and 105. It all feels the same when it's too much.

I have the thermostat set at 72 in my house and it has been coming on say every 30 minutes or so and running maybe 5-10 minutes. Around 10 if not lower out side right now. Sure wish I had the house I want to build and the way I want to heat it on a night like this

Should get to -22º tonight. Finally located the timer & cord so I could plug in the pickup block heater.
Got to think warmer thoughts!

And I'm sitting here in central NC with the A/C running! But they say that's all gonna change, calling for a high of only 35 Sunday, with 90% chance of rain and freezing rain!

It's getting colder here in central MN. I spent most of the day yesterday plowing snow and today thawing out a frozen rear brake on my Dodge van.
But it is nice to have a house with 12" walls on a night like this. Built it in 1984, when 6" walls were starting to catch on. 3ft of insulation in the attic and only a 50,000 btu furnace. Big difference from the trailer house I had before I built. Now not much more than a tank of LP a year instead of 3 tanks before.
Think warm thoughts!

Old;

The coldest I have ever been is when I pulled guard duty at Ft. Lost-in-the-Woods in February. I had gloves and wool liners, lined overcoat and still cold.

YOU KNOW IT'S COLD WHEN

THAT VOICE IN YOUR CAR SAYS 'GO BACK TO BED"

WHEN YOU BLOW THE CAR HORN AND IT GOES BRRR

YOU SPIT IN THE AIR AND A CHUNK OF ICE HITS THE GROUND
YOUR OUTDOOR THERMOMETER READS "TILT"

YOU GO OUT TO START THE TRACTOR AND YOU CAN FEEL IT SHIVERING

Not that cold here this morning but it has been and it will happen again. Keep warm.

The coldest I've ever been was once when I was pall bearer at a funeral. It was -15 degrees and the grave site at the cemetery was on the north slope of a hill with about a 20mph north wind.

Under those circumstances, you're limited in what you can wear, just a suit, topcoat, and gloves.

Even the preacher gave it a lick and a promise, and announced, "There's coffee and sandwiches back at the church".

There is no school because they can't heat the building and they can't start the buses. That was when I was about sixteen. It was -45 every night for four nights. It came up to -15 during the day. I went snow shoeing. Then when it warmed up to 20 degrees a friend and I went snowmobiling. It took two to get the track to turn. One to operate the throttle and hold the sled on its side while the other pulled on the track.

Larry Used to be out at the river and look west about 2 pm and see the clouds rolling. And by the time we would get the troops marched back to the post sleet and ice would be freezing on the ponchos. Then latter in the night ice would freeze in the but can in the barracks. Coldest place I ever worked in my life. Arived there Oct 12 1965 from 86 deg in Fort Jackson NC. Got cold that night and do not think I ever got warm in that place.

Was 80 here in SE NC yesterday, 60's at daylight this morning. Wind shifted to the north mid-morning and it dropped about 15 degrees in a couple of hours. Will be back to 70's on Monday then cold again.
