Any metal halide light experts on here?

I've got six 400w metal halide low bay lights in my shop and slowly but surely they have been going out one by one.I bought them used off of E Bay back in 2000 so I am not complaning but I do need some trobleshooting help.I have already changed the bulb in the ones that dont work with a known good bulb and the bulb is not the problem.I finally took one fixture down today and it has the actual ballast in it as well as a capacitor. How would I go about testing either of these to find the problem? The fixture buzzes when plugged in and the sealed tube in the bulb will start to light very faint but it will never get bright at all. They are wired on 120v if it matters.I really dont want to replace all six fixtures at the tune of $160-$180 each if I can fix mine cheaper.Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

As I recall, mine could be wired for several different voltages. I run everything at 240V I can. I have no idea, but I wonder if you're getting a voltage drop that's not helping matters? All on one switch, and/or circuit?

If you can use them, you can buy new 8 ft florescent light
fixtures with four 4ft bulbs bulbs each for the price of a ballast.

Yes Bob, mine is wired three on the sme circuit/switch.They were fine for over ten years and really started going out within the last year.

Thanks IaGary, I didnt realize you could buy the ballast and capacitor together.I hadnt really looked online but my local supply store guy had told me he could get either one but I wasn't sure how to test them to see which one I really needed.

E-conolight has 6 tube T5 fluorescent fixtures with 54 watt tubes (324 watt total) that they claim are equal to one 400 watt metal halide. I have them in one of the shops and they are super bright. They come on quick. Flick the switch and in three seconds the shop is instantly bright.

I'm not saying you should replace your halides, but someday if you are thinking at doing something these T5's are worth looking into. They have several versions of the 6 tube lights with different price tags and they all look the same in the pictures so I don't know what the difference is in them. Mine are part # E-LN6T5S9NE5 and it looks like they're in the $140 range right now. I'd post a link but I can't figure out how to do it. Jim
