taken from today's paper;

Concrete blocks were seen chained to Rutland’s body
as it was pulled from the river. Officials said the
blocks likely were attached before he was tossed
into the river.
gee, i would have thought it best to toss the body into the middle of the the tn. river from a bridge on a dec. day and then go down and chain blocks to it.

Was that what the cops said or was that a reporter as his/her finest? Seems reporters are getting worse by the day.

The final conclusion was that the victim stole that chain and cement blocks and then tried to swim across the river with them?

I usually don't share my stories about cop stupidity with too many people, but I've got a few spare minutes, so.....
When I was going to college, I lived in an old, large house with three other people in a town of about 1,500. We never kept it locked and the front door was usually open, although we had a screen door that was usually closed. One of my roommates brought a flag from home that had been over the casket of his granddad who had been killed in service during WWII, and we nailed this flag to our wall. About this time, the outdoor flag to the town's post office was stolen. The flag from the post office was something like 15' x 20' (give or take) and the flag attached to our wall was something like 8' x 10' (give or take). Anyway, one day we got served with a police search warrant. The cops came into our house, told us to sit there and not say a word while they came in and thought they had found the "flag bandits". They had to unhook and move our stereo and TV to get to the flag and then they had to measure the dimensions of the flag. After careful calculations, it was determined that the stolen flag was not hanging on our wall, because (and this is what they wrote on our search warrant), "the dimensions are not the same as the flag that was stolen". Our TV and stereo did not work because they had unhooked it and they did not bother to hook it back up. (Not that big of a deal. We probably didn't want them to anyway)
Okay, about a month later, we move to another house. We take the flag with us and hang it back up on the wall. About a week later, we get hit with another search warrant. As the storm troopers, er....police officers come into the house, one of them stopped and ask us: "Hey, you guys look familiar. Did you used to live on Main Street?" We told them that we did as they again handed us another search warrant. After careful measurements, they again determined that the stolen flag had different dimensions than what our flag had.
Now, here's the irony of all this: To you guys who have been on this planet a little while, do any of you know the difference between an American flag from 1945 and an American flag manufactured after 1959? That's right, the number of stars on it. The American flag (that we had hanging on our wall) from WWII has 48 stars, the current flags (like the one stolen from the post office) have 50 stars. These cops were too stupid (or maybe couldn't count that high) to be able to see that our flag was manufactured before 1959.
I apologize to any police office that I have offended. Most of them have my respect.

Some of these replies are ridiculous!!
I knew the young man and I don't see anything funny in some of these useless replies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sure some agree with me.

Jiles, I think most were taking aim at the news story or cops depending on who actually made the stupid comments and thinking the blocks and chains were attached before the body was tossed in the river.

I fully understand the humor that was meant in the original post--not some of the undeserving remarks that were made. I also take offense in the fact that My two sons are Florence policeman---To me, there is nothing funny about any young man loosing his life this way.

Despite the coments you detest, it sounds like this guy was liveing too close to the "EDGE" Wheather he was dumped in the river or he jumped in the river with concrete blocks bound to him, HE went over the Edge, due to his own actions.
The news report was a bit simplistically presunptious. Da!!

ACG,
I fail to see what Jiles is offended about. Seems he can't comprehend whom they were directed toward, unless he is offended just for the sake of being offended.

Most police officers know how to count, when they get their quota for the day or month they can stop giving out tickets. I doubt they would know why the other two stars were added though.

In my career I have made multiple very carefully and accurately worded statements to the news media only to have them completely garbled by our finely educated and professional news media. When they can't even get the road and direction a vehicle was traveling correct, what makes you think they get anything else correct? I've seen them take a printed press release and screw that up too.

I only had one news media covered story concerning me. After it
was over, I thanked my neighbors for helping me find my son and
decided to publically thank them via the local NP. Ha! What I told
them and what was in the paper was like A went to Z.

News is a waste of time to me. That's why I drink my morning
coffee on places like this......heck the weather man can't even get
his story straight. Wrong 50% of the time and gets to keep his job.

I passed a wreck one time. Pick up hit a bridge support.Cab was a little pile of metal even ripped the rear axle off of it. Later at the hotel heard on the news. That it took almost an hour to cut the body out of the truck. Plus he wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Jiles, you said:

" I also take offense in the fact that My two sons are Florence policeman"

I don't blame you one bit. I had an uncle that was a cop and that offended me as well. Perhaps you could have a heart to heart with your boys about their career choices and get them into a better line of work.

You were also offended that you knew this lad. Perhaps you could have expounded on that a bit, and explained how a fine upstanding lad of your acquaintance ended up in this fine fix?

Please feel free to be offended, or better yet attempt to see the humor.

Yea I've noticed that too. If you see/read about a fatal vehicle accident if they don't say anything about seat belts or helmets you know they were used. They always point out if they were not used even if the accident would not have been survivable unless it involves someone trapped in a fire/submerged situation. A police officer they brought in to give us a briefing at Ft Riley KS said "50% of all fatalities in accidents are not wearing seat belts". So I ask him if the other 50% were. Cop didn't know what to say.
