I have a 544 U-hydro the cylinode housing on the carberator bowl is leaking, there is no wire attached to it and it runs fine. Can I bypass that some way or do I need to replace it?

Thanks
Don Monahan

You may get a better response if you post this on the garden tractor forum. I am curious as to how a solenoid operates with no wires attached.

544 as in a utility type farm tractor?? Down lower on the page is the Farmall forum where you will get more answers.
That said I have removed them and installed a adjustable main jet needle but they are not cheap if you can even find one that fits. When I did one I took the carb the and IH dealer and we match things up

It would be wise to replace and rehook the wire. But it can be run with out . But what you would need is a main needle valve and the fittings and packing. What that thing does is when the key switch is turned off the pintel drops into the main fuel jet and shuts off the flow for HOT Shut down and stop's the engine from dieseling .

Don, If the tractor runs with no electrical power to the solenoid, I would suspect someone has "repaired" it by clipping off the needle that protruded from it to shut the main jet when the ignition switch was turned "off".

If that is the case, it is simply serving as a plug for the hole in the carb, and could be replaced by a plug that would thread into the carb. As someone else posted, there have been kits available for replacing the unit with an adjustment screw, not sure where you would find one nowadays, perhaps Robert's Carburetor might be worth a try.

(The original purpose was to prevent backfire at shutdown of an engine with a HOT muffler that could light off the gasoline going through the engine as it coasts to a stop.)

It doesn't operate without wires attached . It means that someone has cut the needle off , as someone else has stated ,and it's just holding the bowl on the carb . .

whizkid

So, it needs to be tightened or a new gasket installed.

whizkid, you are right! I was still half asleep when I read that. Should have thought about that. From now on guess I'll need TWO cups of coffee before I say anything! LOL
