Techumseh OH160 with a bad surging idle

I had a problem with the carb on a miller welding machine. It has a techumseh 160. It would spew out raw fuel while it would surge at idle. Every time I took it apart thinking the float would not seat. I would get it to run perfect and put filter back on. The next day I couldn"t get it to start easy or run good. Well after taking it apart TOO many times and lots of prayers, we finally figured it out. There is a vent hole that comes from the bowl to the front of the carb. The gasket that goes between the carb and air filter has a nothch cut out for this vent hole. What happened was the gasket was stuck on the filter housing and I kept putting it back on where it blocked the hole. Lined up the right way and it ran perfect. Hope this helps someone else. God Bless.

That's a good thing to look for, and on a lot of Tecumseh carbs, the adjusting needle is hidden. If you remove the little plug, the needle will be all the way in tight. If you back it out just a very little, it will run much better.

Every Tecumseh 4 stroke I have owned sooner or later developed surging or "hunting" on idle. The cure I found was to get a complete carb kit and rebuild it. The low speed or idle needle has a small rubber seal around it that wears out pretty quickly. I have a tiller with a 6 horse that I rebuilt the carb on about 6 yrs. ago and it needs it again because I don't use it enough and todays gasoline is hard on the rubber parts. Here's a website where you can get brand new carburetors. http://www.mfgsupply.com/smallengine/smengcarb/smengcarbcomplete/smengcarbcompletetec.html

I"m sure you dont need to be told that techumseh is out of business. We have a little 4 stroke in our sander. Year by year something will go wrong and we'll just end up bypassing the electrical and do it manually. From the choke to the throttle to the kill switch, last year it was the start switch. But, as long as the spinner control works ill deal. The motor is a 2007
