Bout a week ago a couple of geese show up at the place. These are the black and white ones with the red head beaks and head fronts with the rest white; hootus over the end of their beaks. Saw them earler on a farm south of me and now they are here but come and go. Ugliest geese I ever saw in my life.

I have Hackberry trees in the yard and these berries feed a lot of birds in the winter, including NE Bluebirds and Robins.

The geese came to graze the seeds on the ground and other than the dog, in her 40x pen going nuts over them, I enjoyed their casual behavior mannerisms.

Couple of days ago I saw the drake (hard to recognize from the hen) but anyway he was alone. Yesterday same thing. Early on today same thing, but about 2pm she comes from wherever she was and he sees her and there is the biggest commotion and ceremony, hugging and cackling and all......away they went together.

I was thrilled as I thought a coyote or stray dog got her and that was that.

Really made my day.

If you liked them I'll send you a couple of million in a month or so. Around here we call them sky carp. They are pure nasty and can strip a wheat field in a day.

Google Muscovy duck- that's what it sounds like, from your description. I don't think they get mean, like most geese.

This farm is located on a peninsula that is surrounded by federal wildlife reserve on three sides. Guess it is the front coming in (Cold weather) but all day flocks of Canadian geese have been coming in to the reserve. We learn to live with them but some years it is hard, so many of them.

Geese are said to make good guard dogs.

Decades ago, we had some geese and they didn't like our dog. They'd go after her, humans too, but mostly her. She weighed about 140 or so, and it always happened that every time that she would defend herself and go back at them, would be about the time Mom would round the corner and catch her, then take a broom to her. Well, one time Mom was gone and the geese tore into her, but Mom wasn't there to stop her from defending herself. When Mom got home, feathers everywhere and what was left of the geese wasn't edible. No more geese after that.

Works for me but I bet if you talk to 200 folks here this morning that went goose hunting they would tell you they went Canadian goose hunting. Sorry just the red neck way I guess.
