Electronic magneto

Has any one converted a tractor magneto to electronic ignition, such as the ones used in a distributor for battery ignition?

I have never heard of it but in theory it should be able to be done since lawn mowers use a mag and they have things to switch them over and a chip from one might do the job

Can you show us ONE example of that, for a tractor mag, rather than a lawn mower, Walt?

(NOT doubting you, just trying to learn!)

Harvey, I get around quite a bit AND IVE NEVER SEEN A MAGNETO TO ELCTRONIC IGNITION CONVERSION KIT FOR OLD TRACTORS.

Like Bob it would be fun to see one so pleaseeeeeeeeeee post the add if anyone finds such.

Ive seen plenty of mag to battery powered coil/distributor conversions...........

Ive seen plenty of mags left intact to serve as the "distributor" function and an external coil was added so it then worked and was fed energy from the battery and an IGN switch.

Ive seen plenty of mag to battery powered coil/distributor conversions AND THEN AN ELEC SWITCH WAS USED IN THE MAG WHICH REPLACED THE POINTS.

BUT A STRAIGHT TRACTOR MAG TO ELEC IGNITION UNIT (which normally has connection to the switch or coil for battery power that operates switch and powers coil) IVE NEVER SEEN OR HEARD OF

Unlike a battery powered coil distributor ignition that uses battery energy, a Mag does not need a battery connection and can be used on like old hand crank tractors that don't even have a battery. The elec ignitions I've seen are for converting a battery powered ignition over to an elec ignition.

SO LIKE BOB IF ANYONE CAN LINK AN ADVERTISEMENT OR A VENDOR THAT SELLS SUCH AN ITEM PLEASE PLEASE POST IT SO WE CAN ALL LEARN

AGAIN that's for a direct MAG conversion to an elec ignition that can work on a tractor with no battery like many mags were used on

NOT convert a battery coil ignition over to an elec switch and NOT to convert a mag to a coil dist then change points to and an elec switch

and that CAN be used on a tractor with no battery

Please find such an item Id love to see how it operates. It would have to use the mags own internally generated energy to operate the elec switch and power up the coil and NOT require any external battery

NOTE IM NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTT talking about a lawn moWER or magnetron or any such non battery powered ignition the question is about tractors !!!!!!!!!!

God Bless yall

H-MMMM. Would be interesting to experiment with one of those little electronic chips we used to use on old Briggs grain auger engines.
The mag coils are not much difference in size, so it may work.
Might be a way to replace mag points and condenser that are tough to find and expensive. ??

Most any good lawn mower repair shop has them or can get them. Last time I got one for a 1967 Murry I have it cost me under $20 10 or so years ago it was a common thing you could even buy at Wal-Mart. I still remember an old tiller I had. The front bushing was so bad the points would not work because the crank shaft had way to much play so swtich to one of those and it ran just fine other then you filled the oil and checked the gas

I agree , John, and if ever there was a good application it would be on a fuel dragster and even they don't have it on their mags.

Neighbor John just thinking here, but why could not some sparkey as you install the lawnmower type thing to elimenite JUST the points in the mag. The tractor conversions mentioned above do not elimanite the coil as I understand. They just use a different hotter coil. Like one of my former electrican foreman always said I knew just enough about electricity to be dangerous.
