Boots and fence post

how long ago did folks start putting them on fence post? Just one of those things I think about once in awhile. And where did it start.

The first boot was put on a fencepost in 1603 by Spaniards trying to keep in their horses. Didn't work!

The rubber sole of the boot sheds water, thereby extending the life of the post.

On highway 27 near Lewellen, NE there has been some for years. I new the Rancher that stated it there about 1950. A lot of history in those boots.

Never seen boots on a fence post around here... many of the old fence posts on our farm have gallon paint cans on them.

During the summer months, some woodchuck hunters think they have to hang their kill on fence posts.

Guy down the road has them on all his fence posts. He told me it was so that most people would think he was crazy and they'd stay away.

I can't believe none of you guys knew the answer to this.

Ever hear of "Boot Hill"?? I saw my first one in Oklahoma years ago. I was visiting a friend of mine out by Elk City Ok., and on their farm along the road at the crest of a hill were all kinds of old boots adorning every fence post. I asked him about it and he said his grandfather started doing this years ago...sort of a take off on "Boot Hill". I thought it was pretty neat!

Think about boots on fence post all you want. For me it's better to think of the bra's on fence post on some western roads. Better yet think of the gals driving off after the bra was placed on fence post!!
