How would you like to have a few of these. My wife had a turkey, it died, the wife was sad. So I saw a add for baby Emu's. They looked so cute. I bought two of them a male, and female The male died from smoke a couple years ago from a fire that went through. Now I just have this one. These things are dumb as a rock. This thing will out live me. She stopped laying eggs after the mail died. The wife likes her, and feeds her strawberries every day. They eat a pellet like rabbit pellets, Just another mouth to feed at my place. Stan

You might call it a dumb bird but I know several people that paid BIG bucks back in the 80's to get a pair of them and/or Ostrich.
Ratite meat was going to be the meat of the future because of its lower fat and cholesterol when compared to beef according to these people that were into them big time.

well,..lets see how dumb it really is,..got a nice place to live, gets fed strawberries every day and probably will die of old age,.....we should all have it so bad,...LOL

Stan,
My Niece has a turkey at My brothers house that is the meanest bird I have ever seen It attacks most males except Nieces's boyfriend. I pick My brother up every morning and when it is out I just blow the horn at the gate. I hope they make some dressing out of Him next week.

My sister and her husband fell into that "meat of the future" gimmick and had some. What a joke and yes they are stupid birds.

That one has the life of Riley though. Now who's stupid......the bird or the guy paying for the feed and strawberries? But as they say, ain't no price on keeping mama happy.

Well, at least its not ornery. Local folks here had some ostriches- they went on vacation and elderly father did the feeding- he went in the male's pen and got trampled to death.

But I agree- that's one silly lookin' bird.

37Chief,
I hate birds, they are dumb critters... but those are great photos! Especially the close-up.

About twenty years ago, a guy I worked with wanted me to take about twenty off his daughter's hands. Contemplating it, I visited a couple of booths at the Pa. Farm Show, and talked to some of the 'growers' there. After talking with them, and doing some more research, I ran from that idea as fast as I could. Looking back, it was a good decision, even with the 'free' start. It cost Butch's daughter several thousand to get a butcher to process them, and I think they still have some of the product- oil, cremes, and feathers- left.

Most of the people I talked with seemed to be bonified boneheads and short of a couple of cookies in their happy meals. I think some of them are still raising Rex Rabbits on their ranches......
