Tractor Value

Here is a hard one. I need a good solid ball park figure, to pay for a 1951 Super C Farm All tractor. It has not run for 2- 5 years. I"m told the starter is froze up....not sure I understand just what that is. It is complete, seems to be all original. Four cylinder gas...tri-cycle front end. I live in Northern Nevada, Elko County. Needs a real good paint job. Might take some effort to get it running. All the tin is in good shape. Tires are fair. Can any one help me. If need be, I can provide more detail. Thanks.

Will the engine turn over? If not about scrap value. If the engine is free maybe 100 or so over scrap.

Non-runners needing tires go for scrap. Or figure it backwards; after it is all fixed up you could get $2,000 if it is extremely nice. Deduct $1,000 for tires $1,000 for a decent paint job, 1,200 for machine shop and rebuild kit for the motor, other parts $500.00. You can see what you can afford to pay for it. Of course you could get lucky and not need much mechanical work and just perform a 20-20 DIY paint job, but you will still need tires.

The easiest way to save money is buy one done to your satisfaction.Tractors of lower value cost the same to paint,O.H. and add tires.I have seen some real nice tractors and cars bring about 50% of what previous owner spent making them nice. The higher dollar tractors like a 1456,1206,4020P.S.etc. give you a lot more margin and that isnt always enough to make much. The value isnt a lot more than what it weighs unless you need an extra job.

I saw a nice original that ran great with rear weights sell at an estate auction in ohio for
950.About all you have is a parts tractor.

You mention "the starter is locked up". You may get lucky and it is the starter locked against the flywheel and the motor isn't stuck. I never get that lucky but some others do sometimes.

I have a 1950 IH C. Only paid $1500 for a good running tractor with a woods belly mower. Don't want to up set anyone, however the IH C is a good tractor but it doesn't bring high dollar. Which is OK with me. I like mine. Wish it had 3 pt.

I paid $600 for a 1949 Farmall C, belly plow, 8 foot disc, and a Super C with a loader. C ran O.K. and the SC was frozen. C ended up needing a brand new engine, like someone else said, they don't really bring a lot of market value, but man, I just LOVE mine! Does it have Fast Hitch on it? Bryce

Mine has a home built 3pt. Works great. E-mail is open if you need more photos.

Big D, as was mention, the starter may be locked. The old IH engines had a problem with the starter drive and/or the flywheel ring gear getting worn, and they would jam, locking the starter and also binding the engine. If this is the case, it can frequently be freed by putting in road gear and rocking a rear wheel by hand. sometimes loosening the starter mounting bolts are needed. Of course there is always the possibility the starter is "frozen" because the motor is stuck. If you fix it at the owners place the price will go higher, so you have to decide what kind of gamble you want to take.

If it does not start and the engine is not free don't pay much over scrap value. It may be a easy fix or it may cost more to repair than the finished tractor will be worth. A Super C weights about 1.5 tons? x $200/ton = $300. To me, anything over $500 would be a gamble for a tractor in that condition, more if it has a fast hitch. If the seller wants more money he can free up the engine or get it running before he sells it.

Plan that new tires will cost $1000.

Thanks, Looks like the 3 pt works off the lift box. I've heard there were after market kits available. However, I purchased a jubilee for my 3 pt needs. I use the IH C for mowing and pulling dump trailer out of gravel pit.
A friend has an AC 45 he wants to get rid of for around $2K. It was rebuilt, has a loader, which I really don't need. I saw where someone put a snow blade in place of bucket. That might be cool. After having a small backhoe, I'm spoiled with my expectations what a loader should do.
Thanks again.
George.

Big D1, Since it can't start Today! it is Scrap value. As other have said 3000 lbs in wt. @ $200/Ton == $300. Pay no more than $500 over than you are Gambling!!!
