Shift lever won't go in rev.

Yea that would be a little help as i dropped my crystal ball last week and broke it .

But just for shuts and giggles i am betting it has to be a I H .

Steam engines, steam trains and piston driven steam ships could change their engine valving to run backwards. No reverse gears were needed.

Some steam turbine powered ships use a small "reverse" turbine to run their propellers backwards.

I don't know how diesel powered ships move in reverse. Does anyone else know how they do it?

I saw a video of a smaller fishing boat powered by a diesel, maybe 2 cycle, that reversed the engine rotation but I don't have a clue on the large ships.

Many large shipboard diesels are also two cycle engines. Maybe they can shift the camshaft (exhaust valve timing) and shift the fuel injection timing to reverse directions. Lubrication pump and coolant pump could not be driven from the crank shaft then. I expected some former navy people to add their experiences.
