I posted about a month ago that I recieved a recall for my 2004 tundra, frames rusting out.Well I dropped the truck of tue. am and picked it up today they replaced the frame and while they had it apart I had them replace the shocks and timing belt, they suggested I replace the water pump so I had them do that to. I was pleased with the way they treated me they did everything they said and charged me for parts and minimum labor for the timing belt and water pump no labor for the shocks.the frame included all new brake lines front to back and all hardware no charge. It feels like a new truck I am happy with the expierance and intend to let them know.

Nice to see Toyota stepping up like that on what's essentially a 10-year-old truck.

Other side of the coin is...it's sad that there was a need for that.

My retired brother got a job as a curtesey driver
for a Toyota dealer. When he"s not picking up, or
dropping off customers, he just sits in the shop,
quiet as a mouse, and observes. He says; #1, it"s
shocking how much customers are RIPPED OFF !
#2 Almost every customer gets recommended a new
water pump ! It"s amazing how many they sell, and
how much profit they make on them !

Greygoat, I would say it will be more the dealer than not that is ripping off the customer. I have delt with K S Summers in Mattoon, IL. I drive 60 miles there and bypass 3 dealers that are 30 miles away. Besides they have a 57 green Buick Special 2 door hardtop that I drool over everytime I go down. We had one that was a 4 door sedan that blew the doors off T-birds and state cops Fords.

I saw the comment about the water pump. Not familiar with the trucks but the cars drive the water pump with the timing belt. If the pump fails, the full labor has to be expended to replace it. I had a Toyota water pump lock up at 37K miles, just out of the new car 36K warranty. Broke the timing belt. Lucky no engine damage. Cost a bundle with the towing charge. Replacing the water pump while replacing the timing belt is really the smart thing to do. It is what I do!

If you are near the water pump with half the bolts out already, why not suggest changing it?

It should have also got front cam and crank seals and a cam belt component kit to ensure it will make it to the next cam belt interval...

Sounds like good service. Water pumps are a wear item so replace them at your convenience, not when it will cause you a big problem.

Customers ripped off by a car dealership? I don't believe it!

I once spent ten years as a Claims Adjuster working vehicle service contracts. Considering the scams repair shops tried to pull on us, knowing we were professionals, I don't even want to think about what they were doing to an uninformed public. And the large franchise dealers were the worst.

At 140K miles and 9 yrs old it's a no brainer to replace the pump when it's already apart.I am happy with what was done and the short time it took and they gave me a brand new Camri to drive at no charge. The Camri got 30mpg wish the truck did that.

Good news. That is the way it should happen. I remember you original post because I typed a fairly lengthy response cautioning you to make sure they didn't try to ding you for incidentals and add-ons. Should like an honest dealer, which doesn't happen every day regardless of the brand they sell.
