OT Great Nephew

Brother called last night and told me that his grandson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This is going to be rough since the little guy is only 4 years old

Sorry to hear that.

Read an article on the internet yesterday. Diabetes has reached pandemic level. We've got to get control of all the sugar in our diets.

I'm not a diabetic, but I feel better when I limit sweets.

I'm sorry to hear about your nephew's problem. I wanted to tell you about our little neighbor girl. She also developed diabetes about that age. It required a lifestyle change for the whole family. I watched that little gal stick herself like a trooper when she was in first grade. Made my blood run cold - I can barely give a cow a shot. Today she's a beautiful young gal in her early 20s. Still has diabetes, but she has adapted well to it. I hope things turn out at least as well for your family.

Our granddaughter was diagnosed at about the same age. She has adapted well, but her family is in tune with managing it. We see a big difference in doctors and protocol, my wife having taught elem 35 years and dealing with students with diabetes. GD was thrilled when she got her pump, adjusts it herself as needed. Much simpler than injections.

Nancy,
Its not always sugar that causes diabetes. I have had it since 1985.Alot has to do with peoples starch also,(body manufactures chemicals that can't convert it correctly) Some people are born with a weak pancrease, not all,but some.Saying that it's just sugar intake is a bad thing,as saying that having any disease is caused by only one thing the person did was their fault. It's a shame for any person of a young age to contend with any disease, but it happens.Until they stop filling the food we all eat with unknown chemicals, chances are we all will end up with diabetes, and worse. Most type 2 diabetes start at age 55 on,happens more than not. It's a nasty disease.

I have been on insulin for over 30 years and going on 9 years with a pump. The pump is fantastic in that it compares closer to your own body control; you get insulin 24 hours a day
Utilizing the pump is much more critical and requires much more attention than just shooting a Dr's. prescribed amount a few times per day.

ive had a pump since mid 90s,love it,a must have.the newer ones with the cgm and remote control are ideal for kids, they prevent lows from happening....

The scientific community has made major strides in research on type 1 diabetes. Hopefully, the little one will benefit from this in the coming years and a cure will be available.

Type I diabetes has nothing to do with sugar, it used to be called Juvenile Diabetes. Type II diabetes used to be called Adult Onset Diabetes, it is associated with being overweight but skinny people can get it also. There is some research suggesting that Alzheimers is Type III Diabetes, more research is needed but so far it seems that Alzheimers victims brains are resistant to insulin.

I have a great nephew who is Type I, he is a toddler and is already on the pump. It is somewhat easy on him since he doesn't know any other way, his mother has all the worry about diet. A 4 year old should adapt easily, older kids who are used to eating anything it is more of a shock to them.

I have 4 nieces and nephews who are Type I, 1 great nephew who is Type I, several aunts who were type II, I am type II, and both my mother and her mother died from Alzheimers. This is a subject our family is very interested in.
