heat wave this morning

35 degrees this morning after 2 mornings of 24 degrees. Yesterday eastern IA was warmer than we were.

We have calves in a small pasture and are watering them from a hose for the time being. Had to break ice in the tub. My wife wondered what is done for icy watering tanks in the cold country. I commented that heated tanks are available and she wondered what happened before heated tanks. Probably used an ax to break ice. I'm sure there were a lot of problems.

Perfect here today, and yesterday, hopefully saturday for opening day of rifle/whitetail deer, always something to appreciate and lift your spirits !

Back in my youth.... when corn was picked and cribbed, to be shelled later. Most folks had a submersable heater in their stock tank that burned corn cobs and/or small wood or scraps. Always had some paper feed sacks around to start the cob fires in the morning.

Many times when I was young, I had to go down to the creek with a splitting maul to break a hole in the ice for the cattle to drink through.

I suppose these days we would be prohibited from letting our cattle drink from the usually small creek that runs through what was OUR property. Probably would get fined. It"s a different world!
