New engine break in pics

It thawed enough to do some plowing today so I took the opportunity to hook Jeff's 2394 to the plow and work it a bit. If you remember I posted about rebuilding this engine a couple weeks ago and this was the first job since then. Was tough going since this is heavy clay and has been pasture for at least 15 years. The engine ran perfect and I couldn't be happier. It does have an oil leak tho that will need to be fixed, but I'm very relieved that it turned out good.

I don't know what you intend to do with that acreage but let me suggest something. Furrow plow 75% of it. Wait until 30 prior to planting, and burn the other 25% down with roundup.
Do your soil samples on the two plots Apply as necessary. Then plant the 75% and no til drill the 25%. See which works better for you.
You have a very nice old ecosystem grass field there that really should not be disturbed.

LOL. That won't work too well here since 30 days prior to planting it may well have 2 feet of snow on it and most years planting time is 3 days after you can drive on it. It's also much to heavy clay to work well with no til. Several farmers have tried it locally and most have failed badly and I don't know of any that kept doing it.

That tractor still has the Case engine right?? What did you do to it - inframe overhaul with new sleeves, pistons, and bearings??? I have a 2290 that has good power, but more and more blowby. Just interested in what was wrong with it and what you did. Thanks

Did a complete in-frame, new bearings, sleeves and pistons, and had the heads checked and milled. This engine had 13,500 hours and was all original. It was in very bad shape even tho it still ran well. The final straw was water in the oil. The bearings were real bad and 2 pistons had broken rings. The water in the oil came from a failed o-ring on a sleeve. The crank still miked within tolerance for standard bearings tho. I can't believe it ran with how bad of shape it was in. It did have quite a lot of blowby tho.

Jon,
The old girl is looking and sounding good. Nice job fixing it up.
I'm still waiting for that 50F weather, that you said that you are sending me, after that blast of cold that you sent this way. LOL.
Loren.

Your farm in Mn looks just like mine here in northern NY. Nice to see pics of someone else plowing clay! These guys that have light soils and can spring plow have no idea what clay is like.

Some of those engines are really tough. Good thing you did the overhaul when you did - just a few hundred more hours could have done a lot more damage to the crank and the cam - especially with antifreeze in the oil.
