Log splitter

Bought a new logsplitter Tuesday. I like it so far. It is a 22 ton huskee from TSC. Dad and Grandpa have one just like it....has been a good splitter. I don't need much bigger at all...the inverted splitter I built for my skidloader handles the big stuff.....with ease.

I don't care for the no choke setup....but it seems to start ok so far.

I'm shopping for a splitter, no hurry. Loggers left a stack of scraps by the landing and there's a bunch of work off the trails. I got an eye on a 3-point with a pto kit, or a tow behind. Advantages to both but would like to utilize the 885N.

I think one of the best engines offered with these is the honda GC 190, full choke, starts every time on one pull, I pull til I feel compression, same in cold weather, plenty of power for the ram, engine never bogs, this was on the 28 ton Huskee. Speeco did offer more choices on their line. I always liked the red shroud, white metal gas tank honda small engines, had them on trash pumps, they are reliable and easy to use. TSC only offers these Huskee's a certain way, Speeco who makes them, offers more and used to have the Honda motors I mentioned previously.

I think these are all similar, but the 22 ton Huskee is fine, you may want the log cradle, TSC will have it on the shelf, I used grade 8 bolts, and chased the tapped threads, applied ant-seize, so much better with that piece on there.

I like the beam and the overall construction of these, they are reasonably priced, most problems I'v e heard were assembly related, that piece that connects the pump to engine, other than that, pretty decent splitter in my humble opinion.

My brother has the same one, I think there made by speeco. He has had no trouble with his. Neighbor also has one, no problems either, I've got the same thing but it's 3pt hitch for the tractor also no problems. I think you made a good choice.

I've been around the 3 pt splitters. I prefer a stand alone unit. It's just more versatile, quieter and uses less fuel, a lot less in some cases. I know some folks really love their 3 pts but for me it's just lots faster to have the separate unit, more room around it for several people to work, plus a horizontal unit keeps me upright and not bent over. Mine, a 27 ton Troy-bilt I got for half price at Lowes, will do both horizontal and vertical for the really big stuff. I've never hit a hunk of Elm yet that it won't split.

I have a 22 ton northstar from northern hydraulics for about 10 years--works great and never had to do a repair==its a low profile horizontal and was less than $900

I like my horizontal 3 point. One less engine to maintain, and I can adjust the height to whatever is comfy, or set it right on the ground to load big rounds.

I have the TSC 35 ton and like it. I like the feature of being able use it horizontal or vertical. I put a cradle- table on mine .I bought from a guy on Ebay from Montana ( sells them every fall on Ebay). You can put it on and take off in seconds.

My 3pt can run horizontal or vertical, but as you said there's
times I just prefer to hook my tow behind to the atv and go!
Sometimes it's just easier and faster.

I've had a Speeco 20 ton 5 hp BS splitter from TSC for 13 years this year , routine fluid and filter changes are the only thing I've done to mine. Oh I had the tires foam filled $30. each

We have had a Speedco 3-point splitter for 30 or more years. We have put a longer 36 in stroke cylinder on it and added to the beam. It has been a good one. New tractors with 3000 psi are hard on it. They will bow the beam a little. The only thing wrong with it is the knife is on the cylinder. You want one with the push plate on the cylinder and the knife on the beam. That way the wood is pushed away from you and not falling right where you step. We have to have someone on the tractor to run the lever, but both grandsons want that job because the tractor has a cab.

Bought a split fire 3ph a few years ago. Splits on both strokes. Don't really want a stand alone unit because it costs more(already have the tractor) and I don't like engines. I have enough junk to maintain, don't need more work.

I've got 2 splitters. One 20 ton Horiz. and one 35 ton Vert./Horiz. Got the 20 ton unit from Central tractor, you remember them.Finaly had to replace the engine(5 hp B&S),the block broke at the carb mount.Replaced it with a 6 HP Chonda. That splitter still works well after 13 years of use.The other is a 35 ton TSC vert./horiz unit.It is a powerful unit.11 hp B&S that is very easy to start even in the coldest weather.I've heard of several people haveing problems starting the 22 ton units that don't have a choke, only the primer. I'd not care to have a 3 pt. unit.I can't see pounding up the hours on the tractor or useing the added fuel however any that I've seen in operation work very well.
