Hey guys it's Bryce. I just discovered what I think is going to be my next tractor. I am tired of 20 - 30 horse tractors that struggle with a two bottom plow in our soil, so I was griping about it to this farmer and he said: Boy, have I got the tractor for you. After a little research here are the details:
IH 660
Diesel
Hasn't been moved in 25+ years.
"It runs" (I don't think so...)
Below is a link to tractordata, let me know what you guys think of the tractor. Are they any good? Good pullers? Kind of rare? THANKS!! Bryce

Check out IH history on wiki - lot of problems with that series when they first came out. Might be a reason it hasn't been run for 25 years.

I grew up on a 660 wheat and. Good solid tractor and strong puller. Kind of a pain to start if all the glow plugs are not working. Never had any trouble with ours and we worked it hard.

Sitting for that long would be hard on it, gaskets drying out, rotting ect. Would likely have to go through the whole thing.

Ya I hear you... I look on tractordata under "tests" and it said that at max power, max pull, it will burn 5.5 gallons an hour!!! Certainly NOT a hybrid!! Wonder if it has Eco Boost? :) I don't know what I will do, seems like it is in good shape, but like I said, my best friend has lived here all of his life and driven past it almost every day of his life, he says it hasn't ever moved, and he is 38... I would really like to have a beast like this, but I am not sure. Would it having a TA or being a diesel make it rare at all? They didn't even make 7000. THANKS, Bryce

Two kids of T/As - one that is out and one that is going out.... A third of the IH tractors I see on CL say the T'A is out or has been bypassed. That' should tell you about the "sucess" of the T/A. We had one in a 1086. Hated it. Can't remember which way (engaged or disengaged?), but the tractor would freewheel down hills. Scary as hell when trying to hold back a big load of manure or gravity box full o' corn. Were I buying an IH (And I do like the 1066), I'd be looking at one without it.

might better get an 06 or 56 series tractor if you want more power, and a lot more friendly to use. Also way easier to get parts for.

One of the worst things you can do is freewheel a TA. Many have used a TA with success but you need to avoid foolish mistakes like this to make it acceptably durable.

Something was wrong if it free wheeled a hydraulic t/a. The old mechanical ones would free wheel and if like to go would be the death of them. Also the mechanical ones where designed to get you thru a tough spot not so much to be ran all the time. Also you should shift them like you mean it not easy slipping the clutch the whole way. I have 3 tractors with them and they all work and are very strong still
