Took this one this morning and was going to post it - BUT had the wife's camera didn't cooperate and the daughter had to send it to me.
Dad is doing pretty good at 91+ but Mom's health is slipping.

I ran into this guy at Vets dinner and program, here in Mitchell. He was born here in 1917. He flew 34 combat missions as gunner in B-17's with the 8th Air Force. Most of them over Germany.I'm 73. Guess who is who?

Happy Veteran's Day to my dad who served in WWII and passed away on July 4, 1991. He was actually at the barracks in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked.

I can't do the picture thing but I want to tell you about my friend Leo.
He was a tail gunner on Lancaster Bombers with the RCAF. He and and my Dad shared equipment and labour on the farm before I was born. Dad had to leave the farm due to his health when I was about 4 or 5. Leo was my hero because he still farmed ( no offence Dad). It wasn't until my later years as I came to understand the sacrifices that our Veterans made that I came to think of Leo as a different kind of hero. I am sure he, as many others like him, had a whole different outlook on life after the war. Leo never was in a hurry. That doesn't mean he was lazy or unproductive, he made every step count. He had a calm easy going manner which was reflected in the performance of his milk cow herd. My Dad said many times he never knew someone who could get so much milk out of so little feed.
Last spring our Tractor Club toured the Canadian Warplane Museum in Hamilton. I was particularly interested in seeing the Lancaster they have in their collection (one of the few in the world that are still airworthy). I was talking to one of the volunteers at the museum about my friend Leo and he told me that 60% of the Lancaster crews didn't make it home. Leo did make it home and even though he passed 10 years ago I still think of him often. When I get in a bind or am having a tough go I think of the situations that Leo and so many like him faced and things suddenly don't seem as daunting. Thanks Leo, your still my hero!

My dad was a tail gunner in a Halifax bomber(20 yrs. old) and the only survivor when the plane was shot down. He thought the bombs were still on board and suffered a broken back. There is a restored Halifax, pulled out of a lake for static display but I can't remember if it's at the Canadian Warplane Museum. The Halifax never seems to get the credit it deserves. It wasn't as numerous as the Lancaster and didn't have as high a bomb load but it had a longer range and could go deeper into Germany. My dad was shot down over Munster(sp)which had the highest concentration of troops in all of Germany. I would love to be able to go to the museum. The Andy Minarski memorial Lancaster is one of only 2 still flying in the world. The other one is the Battle of Britain memorial Lancaster in the UK. Last year or the year before the Lancaster made a breve stop in Edmonton and I regret not going to see it.

Hard to tell who's who. From the way you guys are dressed, I'm gonna have to go with the guy on the left being you Gordo. Farmers like to wear bluejeans and blue cotton shirts and baseball style caps. Am I right? The guy on the right is just way too ugly to be you! 'Just kidding!

Yep, I'm on the left. Wranglers, levi shirt, cap and boots. A newspaper guy saw us, came over and started making a video. Pretty soon there were a lot of onlookers asking, "who are those guys?" Pretty strange, like we were part of the "greatest generation".
I did send the picture to my college buddy Tom Brokaw , and he asked for his address so he could send him a copy of his book.
He (Tom) also said if you know of any others, let me know. So If you guys know bona fide WWII vets send info to me.
