30-06 deer rifle (used on 4020 JD for varmits)

My son and I were sighting in our deer rifles yesterday, my 30-06 and his 247. He was dead on with his...I couldn't hit much with mine. I told him to shoot my rifle which he'd never done. He was amazed at how hard the trigger pulled....almost an abrupt pull before the gun would fire. Turns out my problems were mostly mine and he was very accurate with my gun. He suggested I have the trigger mechanism checked out on the 30-06. Can these be adjusted or is this the nature of this gun? By the way, I shoot (at) varmits off my tractor with this gun.
 
Some rifles have an adjustable trigger and some require a gunsmith or someone who know the action to stone the parts. Companies like Timney offer aftermarket trigger assembly replacements that are better than factory and often offer adjustment. I have a Timney I very much like in a Savage from before they came out with their new trigger system. There could also be dirt, powder residue, or hardened grease/oil in the trigger assembly that is causing the problem.

You didn't mention the make or model of the rifle, that would be helpful.

Some guns have a adjustable trigger and some don't. You should be able to take it to a good gunsmith and have him work on it. It may just need a rough edge cleaned up.

Sorry guys, there just isn't much visible stamped onto this gun. There may be something under the front scope mount as I can see the number 55806 directly below the base of the front scope mount, but nothing else. This trigger just flat out pulls hard!
 
Flush out the action with your favorite spray can solvent, see if you can remove accumulated grease and gunk. Then lube with a gun oil. See if that eases the trigger a bit.
 
I had a remington 700 30-06 that had a trigger job done to it. It got to the point that if you put a cartidge in the chamber the bullet would fire off before you could get it bolted in the chamber. Take it to a gunsmith and have it properly fixed.
 
Just might be a sportorized millitary rifle.
The old springfield 03 had their maker and serial number stamped on the reciever right where you would drill and tap for the front scope mount.
This also could very well account for the bad trigger pull.
As said before a gunsmith should be consulted.
 
Talk to your son Again. Ask him to try his ".247"
See if that trigger suits you better.

Asking us to help you set trigger on a 30.06 is like asking for the point gap and timing setting for a V8 motor. That serial number looks like 50's Model 70 Winchester.
There should be more info on the barrel.
 
Hey, thanks a million. You're right. Good idea. I should shoot his gun and see the diference. I never thought of that. That's why I come on here and ask questions. I know a lot about grass and alfalfa and cows but when it comes to guns.....I'm at a loss. Thanks Gordo and all others!
 
I also have totally "scoured" that barrel looking for more info. "It just ain't there"......like I said, might be under the scope mounts. You almost have to jerk the trigger to get it to fire.

You should be able to see if the trigger is adjustable if you remove the stock. Even if it isn't, cleaning and lubricating the sear can make a world of difference.

Your best bet is to take it to a competent gunsmith. Without knowing the make and model there's not even a place to start. We don't even know if it's a bolt, auto, pump, lever, single shot...nuthin'. It could be anything from dirt and grime to the safety interfering to loose parts to defective parts. Find a smith and start there.
