Tuff Choice

Well after a lot of talking with my wife and some really hard thoughts for a long while three weeks ago I decided to leave the farm full time and farm part time to take a job working for the city highway dept. It was really hard for me to leave the farm but after thinking about what was best for the family and myself it was the rite move for us. With the costs of my health insurance becoming unaffordable for us and not having much to ever be able to retire it made the decision alot easier when I got offered the job with good pay and excellent insurance and retirement plan.

I feel for ya.I too have been considering leaving fulltime farming. But as yet I havent yet found a job.Good luck! and congrats on finding a good job.Steve

Thanks. I had been looking and considering this move for a while before I came across this job. I really wasnt ready to leave till I found the rite job where I wouldnt be second guessing my decision. The last day at the farm full time was kinda tuff for me butt after my first check and knowing I have good benefits it got a lot easier for me.

I understand what you are going through. The rising costs of living and health insurance are consuming more and more of what I make farming. It makes it hard to keep dependable equipment and the fierce competition in the neighborhood makes expansion very difficult. So don't feel discouraged by searching for some off-farm income. I hope you still can get your "fix" by farming part-time while you have another job. Good Luck!

Hate to hear that but you have to do what's necessary for your family first. Then do what you can to keep your farm going. I was the last one to grow up on our home place 153 years in the family (family still owns it but I don't think I'll ever have the
chance to live on it or work it again) I'm sure your kids will feel the same as I do I hate knowing I can't go home again. If it takes an outside job to keep it in the family do it. Good luck to you. I'm sure it will work out.

i farmed and worked off to save the farm hard choise but did it. becarefull on insurance some dont pay on farm accidents its like working at mcdonalds and hardies if you get hurt at hardies mcdonalds doesnt have to pay. seen it happen women had worked to have insurance housband got gored by bull insurance didnt pay farming is a business and can have workmans comp.im having surgery today rotar cuff at work manhandling 200 + lbs no workmans comp because according to hr i did it on the farm .be carefull and good luck

Did you make the right decision? YES you did. You'll find you have time to get done what you need to,and man when you do retire, that retirement check will look real good as you go back to the farming. Congrats, the right decision.

Read a poem by Robert Frost THE ROAD NOT TAKEN. In conclusion it was the right choice because it made all the difference.

He did not know where the other road may have taken him

I don't know all your details, but the stability of the road commission job and the health insurance are probably welcomed. And the comfort of knowing you can pay your bills every month with highway job.

Resize your farm accordingly, and slightly adjust each year to fit.

I work full time at an "off the farm" job. I grow landscape/nursery trees and use this as filler. I could take on more jobs, but right now it is not possible with my full-time job. The rest of my property I lease out to the local "big farmer". I could go bigger with more trees, but it wont replace my regular job $$ wise, plus not sure my knees and back would handle it.
