Polarizing a Negative ground gen

I have been fighting with my ole John Deere 1010 charging system. The guy at the local shop put the generator and voltage regulator on the bench and all the test checked out good. On the tractor everything works except the generator light stays on. Tractor is basically running on the battery. Lights work great so I thought the polarity is not correct. I must confess I am using the tractor with a negative ground setup and it was factory positive ground. What am I missing about polarizing the generator? Does the tractor need to be running or switched off?

Polarize as folows:
Woth the tractor shut OFF! but all things connected, use a piece of 10 gauge wire (stranded os OK, solid is best). Strip the ends about 1/4inch, and jump from the Bat terminal on the regulator to the Arm terminal on the regulator. This bypasses the Regulator and gives the Field iron poles a magnetic charge. (polarized) If this does not work. Jim

NO; a generator does hot care which post is grounded. The procedure described by the other writer is used to set the generator to charge whatever direction it is hooked up

No, makes no difference if POS or NEG ground
What you are doing by polorizing the generator, is telling it this is a NEG ground system (in your case) and should charge with the correct polarity for a NEG ground system.

That's great because I read a post earlier today that gave me pause. With neg grounded systems being by far the most common today it would be likely for someone to accidentally hook up jumper cables wrong if I used the factory pos ground setup. Something I had never considered.

Keep idiots away from your Good stuff. Someone may try to jump it as it was designed! and also screw it up!! Jim

Go back to pos ground as thats what the regulator is made for if you havent burned it by using wrong ground better get it checked again.
