Best Buy of the Year - yours?

Well, its not often you find something you need and or have been looking for at a low price, however being a bit of a "connoisseur" of old iron, implements, farm, garden or what have you, things do turn up, and you find a great deal on occasion, what was your best buy this year ?

I'll start off, mine was yesterday, of course the year is not over but....

I found a 7'-0" McCormick-Deering soil pulverizer, (cultipacker) double roller, for $150. Seller was a very nice person, very reasonable price considering what many of these are listed for. I have kept an eye out for one, not intently looking, but this turned up, got my attention, and will complement my food plot implements quite nicely, as well as pasture renovation at the other place, we have some replanting to do.

Last year, I got a single McDeering cultipacker for $300. I wasn"t really impressed by the price, but although it was old it was in very nice condition. You did very well.

I have the exact same one. Use it behind our grain drill for oats/hay every year. Leaves a nice seed bed.

As far as the year's best buy? I'd say a Fox chopper with two row corn head in excellent condition. Never sat outside, looks great, works perfect. $800!

Case 300 chopper. This chopper was hardly used but had a problem with the corn head feeding. The previous owner said he never got a wagon full with it. Made a few adjustments and it works great now.

I found a 1991 chev 3/4 ton 4x4 extended cab 6.2L diesel with 64000 original miles for 500.00. Its from an older woman whose husband passed away. The truck sat for 12yrs (they did not need it). We put 2 batteries, a fuel transfer pump, alternator and fired her up, she runs like a new one. Jim

I bought a Ford 8N with a Ford 901 rotary mower for $450.
Not running of course.
I got it running in about 3 hours, cleaned and painted everything.
Two weeks after I bought it I sold the tractor for $1700.
Kept the mower.

I think for us it is our 'new' pickup.1999 Chevy 1500 extended cab, short bed 4x4.It only had 81,000 miles! it's like new. Finally,we have a decent, respectable vehicle that we can travel in!Side note: when we go somewhere that hasnt seen us for a while,You can see the 'who the hell is that?' expression on their faces before we get out! Fun!!

I've kept my eye open for some 8.25x20 tires for the grain truck. Saw some on CL for 100 bucks. He said he thought they were about 90%. Went to see them and the knobs were hardly worn off. Just got them put on the old truck - we're stylin now! Now maybe I won't have to deal with those widow-makers for another 40 years.

a tom"s product machine was give to me has 20 cents on the door would post a picture if it would let me i use to be able to before they updated

There were a lot of those around (under the IH scheme and colors) and I never heard of feeding problems. They have the metal straps that push the corn back against the gathering chain. Maybe something happened with the strap? Maybe the assembler at the dealership did not understand how to set the machine up properly? It happens a lot even today. Some dealerships "farm out" assembly to individuals versus dealership personnel.

Hi
Well I guess on Thursday, I Went to the wreckers to pick up parts for a Massey 1135. when I visit these places I always ask to look down the blue line.
This trip i asked if he had any 36" tires in the line. Guy said i got 2 in the green line on a B Deere, they are the only ones here and are rough!. this guys rough and mine are different. So went and looked to be sure they weren"t better than he said. well surprise surprise these tires are roughish but they have fordson 36" rims with B dishes cut and bolted to fit the B.
Those rims are rare as H@!! round us and I need 2 sets for the E27N P6 tractors I just got.
$200 for rare rims, semi useful move round the yard tires, and tubes would have to be my buy of the year so far.
Regards Robert

I had 4 purchases I thought were really good deals this year. I got a 3-point dirt scoop for $25 at the auction. Answered a Craigslist add for a $500 manure spreader in great condition. Another ad on C-list got me a pair of rear tires with rims for my Farmall H. 90%+ tread, $500 for the pair. Last but not least, I got a really nice carry-all for $100.

Now if I can find about a 3-ton grain wagon with auger capable of hauling feed between here and the feed mill 20 miles away.....

Acquired this 1010 W this summer. Would have had it with one bid had the auctioneer not called in some help from the back forty(family member not paying attention).

I bought this in February for $5850.

As far as that packer,I bought a 12 foot Brillion with a 4 inch axle a few years ago for that price. A guy called and said he had some stuff he wanted to sell, asked me if I was interested in any of it. You bet for that price.

This one had all the straps on one side doubled up LOL Don't know why that was. I've seen another that has longer straps than this one and I'm going to buy it for parts. This one still has some problems so maybe the longer straps will take care of that.

This summer I bought a WD Allis Chalmers with 3 bottom snap coupler plow and a mounted 80R mower for $500. The man I bought it from wanted it to go where he could see it again if he wanted.

I scrapped one like that a few yrs ago. Couldn't get anybody to even look at it not even for 25$. Wasn't a McD but some other old horse drawn unit. Knocked it apart and sold the wheels for cast scrap

I'm a younger guy, and have craigslist on my walmart smart phone.

Probably my favorite buy this year. 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Cummins 12 valve 5 speed. 180K rusty and functional, fresh off the farm. $3000 Didn't even try to haggle on price. The farmer was surprised he had so many calls on it.

Found a running Ford 9N for $350. Looks a lot like the ones people ask $1100 for except this one has a one new back tire and rim - worth about $400 by its self.

My buy of the year was a nice Husqvarna hydro lawn tractor (500 hrs.) with 54" deck, front blade, tire chains and rear weight, sun shade, seat cover, new battery and a full tank of gas for $850 at a farm consignment sale. They are selling in my area for twice that, without a blade or sun shade. Cut my mowing time way down, used a 46" cut before but this newer one made a big difference in time, even the wife noticed and she doesn't usually care about such things.
