Listed a disc on Craigs List

I listed a disc on craigs list, I thought I would get a little more than scrap price. I got several answers. One guy wanted to know a lot. I thought he was really interested. The last thing he wanted to know was, if the bearings were good. I got my jack out of my truck, slammed my knee on the ball hitch getting it out. Jacked up the disc, and the bearings were all were good. I told him all the bearings are fine. I haven't heard from him since. Just wasted a lot of time on him for nothing. I'll bet some of you have had the same experience. Stan

Probably still shopping or else waiting for it to be listed a few more times and make a lower offer. I've made some good deals on cl after watching them be listed for two months.No one deals on a freshly listed item. Just the way the game is played.

When you use Craigslist you will get more than your share of jerks. In the past I have listed a diesel tractor for sale and usually some one calls and wants to know if is has a gas engine. I have replied "yes". And then you will get the ones who want you to send more photos or the ones who don't have a clue about what you are selling. My advice, don't use email and when they call tell them to come and look. The tire kickers won't show. Don't waste your time checking bearings or anything else, it is used and if they want new tell them where to go.

Yep,nothing to complain about if it isn't worn out.

I've been happy buying on CL. If you wait too long to reply, you're going to lose more often than win. If I'm looking specifically for something, fence for example, I check three or four times a day.

I buy and sell on CL quite often. It gets a little scary.
You either invite strangers to your home, or you go to theirs.
Or meet in public, but people have been shot doing that too!
Of course, you do the same with a newspaper ad just on a smaller scale.
I like the "new" feature where you can post a map directly to
your house right in the ad for every crook in the world to follow!

There are a bunch jerks out there, but there are also a lot of
good folks.
I could start a rant over all the CL deals that went South on me.
Two hour drives to find out the jerk sold it knowing I was on my way,
buyers that want me to cut the price in half before they see it, etc.
But most of the time it has worked out to my benefit.
Be patient. And cynical.

I have bought a lot and sold a little. Mostly good experiances. I did drive 100 miles and then the guy wanted more than he had it listed for. Always go buy a prepaid phone and use that number to call and in my listing. I listed an old pickup on ebay once and gave my number. The truck didn't bring what I wanted, but a guy called EVERY day for about 6 months asking if I'd take about a 5th of what I had it listed for. I sold the truck and then he called for another 3 months wanting the number of the guy I sold it to. I ignored the calls but he left a million voice mails. Like anything else, most folks are wonderful but there are lots of ask holes and disc heads out there.

Since I started checking the box (circle)that says "no e-mail" I have got rid of ALL the spam/idiots! May as well use your phone # because idiots/spammers don't want to talk . I've had nothing but good luck buying AND selling on there but maybe it's because of my expectations to begin with.

Sometimes it doesn't matter email or phone.
I talked to one guy on the phone at 8 a.m.
told him I was on my way and would be there at
10 a.m. since it was a 2 hour drive.
I showed up at 10 and he had sold it at 8:30.
He tried to pay me for gas. I told him he should
pay for my time instead, but he didn't like my wages.
I certainly understand not holding something "until
next week", you don't know if they'll show up.
But an hour and a half would have been reasonable.

That is just part of dealing with the general public, some people are just like that. It's always been that way and probably always will be.

No more listing for that disc. It is going to China in pieces. Stan

I always make it clear when I'm headed out to someone's house that they promise they will not sell it while I'm in route. I don't ask them to hold it any longer than the drive takes me. I don't want to sound to excited but especially when I think something is a real deal and the drive is long I make a specific point of saying it--usually those situations I'm not planning to offer less anyway as it's obviously a real deal.

I'll second not accepting emails. I also note no text messages too. I find people are quick to send a text or email even when they are not really serious but if they have to call they are actively interested.

That's exactly what I did Chris.
I was paying the full asking price.
We agreed on a time, he said it would be there.
Then it wasn't.
Some people are just not trustworthy.

Like I said earlier though, most of my experiences
with CL have been positive.

Yea, there is one that ruins everything. Hopefully you'll never run into another like this one.

The biggest problems for me are when I'm selling and mostly it's aggravating not devastating.

1. I don't give my address in the ad (that's like saying here's what you'll find at this address come steal it). But I know people want to know if it's North or south of town as that can be 20 miles difference and with gas prices... So especially on low priced items I give a major intersection 1/2 mile from me but some people seem unable to handle anything but a street address so they call to get that and then say it's too far.
2. They seem excited about the item get my actual address and ask when they can come by--but for some reason it feels more like when will you be away--then they say they'll call me back tomorrow or something never to be heard from again. I always say I'm in and out--just give me a call before you head this way to make sure I'm home.
3. The ones that say they'll come out at X time and never show.
4. The ones that call about really cheap items and want to ask a thousand questions.
5. The ones that call about a big higher dollar item that needs to be seen to be appreciated and the very first thing they ask is what's the lowest you'll take.

But for all the problems many just show up, hand over the asking price and are overjoyed.

Buying can be good too. I have to figure they might not want to haggle and sometimes I don't even ask if they'll take less. Just yesterday I went to pick up 2 rugs for free. Someone had done a no show on the fellow before me. He was moving and cleaning out a storage building. He just started giving me stuff. I got several somewhat valuable antiques as well! Recently I purchased a bunch of lawn equipment from some folks that were moving. She said if she found anything else that went with it she'd call me. Yea, right. She did!!! Brought me about $100 worth of stuff--she lived quite a distance away and I'd have gladly driven back for them but she insisted on bringing it into town and I met her at a Walmart.

I bought a lawn tractor with a snowblower off CL.
When I went to put the snowblower on I realized I
was missing the two big lift assist springs.
So I called the folks and asked if they might
still be hanging in the shed where it was stored.
Sure enough, they were and they INSISTED on delivering
them on the weekend.
Between then and the weekend, they also found all
the original manuals to the mower and snowblower.
Brought them over too. One of the better deals!
I still have the machine. 1974 Ford, mower deck,
snowblower, chains, Ford soft side cab with manuals.

It's not just craigslist.

If you don't want to deal with the riffraff and idiots, just don't sell anything. Otherwise you're going to have to deal with them.

Craigslist just SEEMS worse because it's free and so easy to access, that you use it more often than say, a newspaper classified.

Stan, I have sold a good many and bought a few things. Just like in business you run across all kinds. The best customers are the ones that come from a distance further the better I'll gladly wait. I had an excavator I sold fairly cheap I had more tire kickers and at least three people shook my hand and said they would take it or set up a time for me to deliver it and backed out. The best people I ever dealt with were from the far side of Ohio and came to buy a covered dump truck body you use with a chipper super nice guys. Just a certain percentage of people are difficult.

(I had listed the price in the ad!!!) I wrote back exactly what I had listed it at and he wrote back "Ugh". Really! Read the effing ad you moron!!! And quit wasting my time.

What kind of disc? I am looking for a small 8-10 foot tandem disc, it you are close I am interested

Don't respond to generic texts. They didn't care about your item. They didn't read your ad beyond getting your phone number off it. They got what they wanted - a number that responds to texts.

I flat ignore all responses to my craigslist posts unless the person shows that they have some grasp of what I'm selling. Any other kind of response is just phishing for a phone number or email addy.

The ones that are using such clunky and time-consuming tactics to harvest emails and phone numbers are the real idiots. They're spending several minutes to get one phone number or email address that's worth a few cents to a spammer/telemarketer, IF they don't already have it! Ironically, the spammer/telemarketer probably already has the phone number or email address already!

Too bad they don't realize if they put forth half that much effort in a legitimate job they could earn 10 times as much.
