My father has a complete and in mint condition Simplicity Model V with original manuals, attachments, grease gun, etc! He is trying to figure out whether he should sell it, keep it and pas it down or even if it is worth anything. Here is the info my father sent to me:

Simplicity garden tractor model V serial # 1598 with

A Briggs and Stratton engine model 14, type 202074, serial # 163049 which

was passed to me by my father who purchased it in the early 1950’s. On

checking into internet I could only find one from 1949 and it looked in very pool

condition.

It has been stored in my basement for many years and is in perfect condition

with the following attachments:

6 shovel cultivator counterweight

wheel weights 8” or 10 “ plow

power take-off grease gun

Some of the attachments have rust due to having be used by my father on

his small farm.

I also have the original owner’s manual, Briggs and Stratton engine manual, and

the grease gun manual.

This unit was in perfect working order when I stored it in my basement and I

Occasionally turn the motor to ensure it is not stuck.

He contacted Simplicity Manufacturing out of Wisconsin a year ago, but did not receive anything back from them. Any info you can pass on to me would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!

Regards,

John Kennedy

I'd post this on the "garden tractors" section of this website, then google it- lots of stuff there. I'm sure there is a Simplicity group somewhere, that could get you further insight, as well as your best prospective buyers.

Once you do decide to put it on the market, get it running first, even if you have to take it to a mechanic. "Ran when parked" will cost you about half its value.

They don't sell for much in my area, regardless of condition. I've always felt some of these vintage garden tractors ought to bring more, but in general, they do not. If your's is all original, looks like near new, and runs good with all the attachments - I'd would not be surprised to see it sell for $500 or less at local auction.

A friend of mine had his father's Waterbury two wheeler with all attachments in excellent original equipment. Never left outside and he had the manuals and original purchase invoice. He brought it to the big antique tractor auction nearby at McFaddens in Sharon Springs, NY. It sold for $250.

If it was mine and I was thinking of selling - I'd try Ebay and/or Craigslist, put a reserve and run it for a few days. If no interest, pull it and it will only cost a few bucks.

When the economy was good - the only garden tractors bringing good prices were the rare and exceptional ones except in special circumstances. Now - with our dismal economy falsely supported by Feds making fake digital money? Even worse. The Simplicities are great little tractors but also VERY common. Here in NY, the David Bradleys and Simplicities (or Montgomerty Wards) are all over the place.

Around here they go dirt cheap. I bought the smaller one long ago at an auction with a rotary mower attachment for $35. I liked it well enough I looked for a 5 horse 3 gear one and got this one in good condition for $120. Useful cheap fun! By comparison Cushman scooters of the same era that originally sold for a similar price sell for thousands. For no more than you'll likely get you might as well keep it?
