I may seem a little like B&D's manual issue on this one, but my vent is people that post issues with computerized vehicles without pulling codes, then the people that just respond blindly based on absolutely no information.

Speaking of codes, I finally broke down and bought a code reader the other day- not because I'll fix much of anything, but have had a couple of instances where the Service Engine light comes on, I take it to my mechanic, he says, It was nothing, just a hiccup that happened when you went through a puddle or something- so I want to be able to at least see if its something serious.

So pulled out the Haynes manual for my '99 Buick, and was surprised to find NOTHING about codes- not even the location of the hook-up socket (I found it, under the dash)- Always liked Haynes manuals, but its as if codes don't even exist. Would have thought they'd have had something about the subject.

There should have been a book with your code reader. Not sure about big rigs, but codes for all cars & light trucks since 96 models are the same.
I alway carry my reader & book in car so if away from home I can pull the code next time i stop. Only takes about 30 seconds to do.

Mike, not sure about your Haynes, but some of the books had
the codes in the Emission Controls section. Chapter 6 IIRC.
Google has them also. :)

(quoted from post at 19:21:58 11/06/13) just put a new oxygen sensor in it.

Which one? One of my trucks has 4 O2 sensors. At $39.00 each, playing a guessing game gets expensive.

Dad has a code reader! Very handy, as you can reset the light, as has already been stated! Frustrating when having an issue at no codes! On my wife's '02 Trailblazer it all of a sudden developed a massive miss-ready told me it was third cylinder no fire! Changed the coil pack-miss is gone!

Hey! It's a FORUM!!!! you ask a lot of people because there is a lot of knowledge and experience out there. It is up to the asker to sift the chaff from the wheat.
