Well, coming home today and the 5 speed died, not sure if it's the 5th gear fallen out or not yet, the tranny is jammed right now, will trailer it home tomorrow. Any way, my question is will a 6 speed bot right in in place of the 5 speed? Or is it all different? Truck does quite a bit of towing and the six speed would be nicer, if i can find one.

Thanks for your help and replies!

Friend has a Cummins dually '97 model and his dropped out of 5th one day. It is a common problem and relatively easy fix. Google Dodge 5 speed fall out or something to that effect and see what you can find. You may rather fix than replace.

Sound like its locked in two gears or something else in the shifter take top off and look to see what happened. Could as simple as broken spring in one of the ball indents

A junkyard---er, auto parts recycler, should be able to tell you if they would interchange. I guess they still use interchange manuals, or now I guess they would be on CDs.

Yeah...you lost your nut. It backed off allowing 5th gear to move. Seldom do they jam though. There is a fix for it...look at the internet.
6 speed is not a bolt in. There are a lot of changes.

Happened to me in my '98 dodge. After I lost the nut and had it repaired my reverse gear jammed due to uneven wear...more shop cost to replace that gear.

Were you in fifth gear and the truck all of the sudden acted like you were in neutral then you tried to shift and it then won't shift at all?

I'm no expert with this tranny but I' have had a little experience with both the locking up and fifth gear. My Dodge Cummins has this tranny. I worked for the previous owner and he had the snap ring come off of 5th gear, letting the gear come off the end of the shaft. They drove it that way for many miles without 5th. I took it apart, replaced the snap ring, put it together and it's been running fine for the last six or seven years. If I remember right the so-called 5th gear update had been installed but they put the worn, used snap ring back on the end of the shaft, and it came out of the groove.

When the previous owner first got this pickup (used) the tranny had been fresh rebuilt through Inland parts. I drove it home to the new owner's place, about 600 miles, and it suddenly wouldn't come out of reverse. I pulled the tranny out, they took it to the nearest Inland parts place and came back with a different rebuilt one. A couple of days later they took off for Texas with it, loaded down with tools, compressor, welder etc. and hooked a loaded 30' combine header trailer behind it. At Seiling OK the tranny locked up, same as yours. They had a shop pull the tranny and send it to the Inland parts place in Oklahoma City. Inland accused them of pulling a load in 5th,claiming the tranny can't take it in 5th and it will lock up. It's pulled many hard loads in 4th since then without problems. I too would like to have a 6 speed in this pickup but the 5 speed has to give up the ghost first. Jim

I'd be considering the 6-speed swap..but no knowledge on it.

I avoided 5-speed 5.9's when shopping for a truck due to the 5th gear thing and "can't tow in 5th".

in 5th, at about 40mph, (had to slow to pass a
parked car on side of hwy), then went to accelerate,
and heard a bad crunchy/grinding noise and then
engine started to labour, clutch in and coasted to a
halt, engine will stall with clutch out

Sounds like the tranny is toast, sorry to say. If you do find a way to put a 6 speed in it let us know for our information. With the 5 speed there's too much of a gap between 3rd and 4th when you're pulling a big load. You have to have it darned near wrapped up to the governor in 3rd to be able to be above the turbo when you go up to 4th. Good luck. Jim

Gosh dang, wasn't one of my Dodges, but did have that happen to one of my Deeres a few years ago at the same time brake rods were rusted so had no brakes. Clutch in, locked between gears, no brakes, bouncing down a hill faster then I could think to drop the loader. Had to split her to fix that one which included a bent shifter fork...in my case. Things happen. Life would be boring if everything went perfect.

Good luck with your truck. That Deere of mine is all fixed up, including the brakes.

You probly lost some teeth on some gears when they sound like that bad things have usauly happened inside you can get a reman nv4500 for about 1500 with the full updated main shaft . They also aren't hard to rebuild at all

never heard the can't tow in 5th one, i was told not
to lug the engine down in 5th with a load on, i try
to keep the engine rpms around 2000 (60mph), i do
quite a bit of towing, 24ft flatdeck with 2 7000lb
axles and a 18ft stocktrailer with twin 5000lb
axles, truck has 300 and some thousand miles on it,
so i'm not complaining too much, had just done the
clutch though, would have been nice to only take
everything off once
