Any 7.3 ford powerstroke experts? I need some help diagnosi

I'm having issues with my power-stoke diesel. It has low miles. It needs hpop seals however when driving it it surges really bad at mid rpms. Today it was doing it while it was idling. I have a video of it if someone can help I can txt or email it. Sometimes it runs fine all day others not. Also if I start it and let it idle a bit a warm up its fine and I can get about half way to work 6-8 miles and It will start acting up.

Is your check engine light on? My 97 had a barometric sensor go out, and it sorta did that, but it sounds more like a fuel issue.

I have 2002 and it did that, but only on a heavy pull. I think it as the fan clutch. Once I got to the top of the pass it has been ok since. My thoughts was the fan had not kicked in for a long time and was stuck. It does idle up and down when warming up.

I'm not talking about how it idles up when it is warming up I mean after I drove it to work in the parking lot it sounded like it had a pulling cam in it huge lope.

Wouldn't you know it,just as everyone talked you into keeping it !!!!!

Likely something simple.

Have you checked the oil?? I let it get low in my old beater powerstroke. Kept plenty of pressure on the gauge, plenty to keep the engine lubed, but not enough to keep the HPOP and injectors happy. I'd look there. Then possibly at your fuel pump.
My good '96 is in the shop right now with unknown (but still expensive, I'm sure) issues. Hope to have it back soon...

Good luck!

Ben

Lots of things that could cause that:
Check the oil level. Has it been changed lately? They can really cut up when cold with old oil in them. Usually stops when warms up.
Fuel level in tank? Doing it on both tanks? Fuel pick-up/strainers fall apart. Makes them start sucking some air with about 3/8 tank showing, will quit before it hits the E.
Check that the IPR actuator is tight on the back side of the HPOP. Stamped metal nut there can back off and let it slide back.
I find lots of good info on thedieselstop dot com.

Trying to second guess a computer diesel is useless. Hook it up to a good scanner and moniter what it is doing as far a HP oil pump pressure, Fuel pressure, turbo boost pressure, check for codes. When you start throwing parts at these suckers to try to fix them it gets expensive.

could be your trans range sensor, but more than likely related to oil pressure, when romping pull trans range sensor or throw it into neutral, and wiggle it back and forth

What cam sensor is in it? If it's that newer one they just had a recall on find a good old one or by one from an ih dealer. Also like everyone else said need to pull codes. Also it could be your leaking hpop is sucking air and since that is used to fire the injectors that would cause problems. Also is there a fuel leak? Again air entering the system wouldn't be good. Does it use any oil? Could be injector seals.

A couple other possible causes are the icp (injector control pressure) sensor or the ipr (injector pressure regulator) valve. Also could be shorts in the harness but I really wouldn't consider that until you've checked everything else

Check the waste gate. You can wire it open and see if that helps. They can and will surge at mid rpms and mid on the warm up temp if that is the problem.
