I have A IH super c that I changed to 12v neg. ground. Did not change anything else other than put A resister at distributor to keep 6v ignition. Know it only starts when I let off the key. what has to be done to start when Iam in start . thank you jim

Basically, you need to by-pass the ballast resistor. I think you can run a second wire from the starter button to the coil, that way the by-pass wire will not be "hot" after the engine starts.

A keyed ignition switch was not standard for a Super C. The ignition switch was an push-pull switch that hooked the negative terminal on the coil to the negative terminal on the battery through whatever else was in the string.

There are strings on this topic all over this site. Basically - To make your ignition work with a negative grounded battery, you need to hook the wire that goes to the positive side of the coil to the "I" lug on the ignition switch.

Assuming a Starter Relay with 3 terminals (two big one small)is used with the key switch, do the following:
With 14 gauge wire, start at the starter side connection of the relay (not battery or the little one) connect a Diode in that wire (5 amp 200 volt) so voltage will go from the starter to the ignition coil, and not the other way) Put the band end of the diode toward the coil.
The wire then connects to the coil side of the ballast resistor.
Now when the starter turns, cranking voltage goes to the coil bypassing the resistor. In addition, the ignition system cannot try to turn the starter.
It will give the coil proper volts to fire the engine, then let it run through the resistor.
If it is a 4 terminal relay one little one will be marked "I" just connect this to the ignition coil directly, bypassing the resistor as above, as it needs no diode. Jim

My H does the same thing since I converted to 12 volt. Only does it when its cold out. Since I hardly run it in the winter. I use a jumper wire with alligator clips and attach to the starter button then to the coil. When it starts take it off.

A resistor with less resistance may cure your problem.

The wrong resistance value can lead to pitting on the points. You can tell if you need more resistance or less resistance by looking at which contact the material is being deposited on.

my vote would be just to get a REAL 12v coil ad do away with t he monkey rig of byasses and such.

If one like monkey rigging.

then why not a cheap fog lamp relay actuated with the starter line. NO connections across resistor.. during starting the resistor is jumped out.

lastly a manual single pole momentary switch could be wired across the resistor.. horn putton.. whatever... push it while starting.

all work...

that or get the correct value resistor.. :)

"KEY" means you have changed some stuff and are using a solenoid to enguage the starter or something else. If you have a sw thats made for starting it will have a terminal for ign marked and that wire goes to the coil.
