Gotta Be a Unique Tractor-

A close friend has a Massey Ferguson 35 Deluxe. We got to talking about it a few weeks ago, and discussing the age of it. He got the serial from it, and I got my book out. His serial is SCF204108. So far, so good. Now for the book. It's a 1960. But the MF 35's started 1960 with serial 204181. Hmmm... And the TO-35 Ferguson started 1960 with 203360, the last year the Ferguson was built. So, it's a TO-35, or it's a MF 35. But it's red, and has MF decals and gauges. But, according to the book, it's a TO 35 and should be grey? It has to have been built on the day of the formation of the new Massey- Harris Ferguson company. To me, that is sort of a landmark!

Don, I would post this on the MF section to see what is said.

For what it's worth my 1972 I&T official guide says Ferguson(gray) TO-35's were made from 1955 thru 1957. The beginning SN# for 1957 was TO171741.

When I go to the MF listing, it shows MF(red) TO-35's starting in 1958 with SN 178216,1959 SN 186603, and 1960 SN 203360.It then shows MF-35 beginning with SN 204181 also 1960.

I worked for a MF Dealer from 1967 till 1973 and found those early year tractors after the merger of Ferguson and Massey Harris confusing at times.

Interesting subject to say the least, Bill

That's what my book shows. So, this tractor has to have been built right around that production change- it has the MF garb and the Ferguson serial number. Just another step in the changes in the industry, I guess...

Sean, I like your chart also. As I told Don there was a lot of confusion in early years after MH and Ferguson merger. I have a book, if I can find it that covers some of those years that I will look and see if it gives more info. Massey Harris Ferguson had both Massey Harris Dealers and Ferguson Dealers for the first few years. They had same model tractor painted different colors for the different Dealers those early years. Good example was MHF-50 (red)for MH Dealer and Ferguson 40 (cream colored) for Ferguson Dealer, but they were identical tractors. Record keeping and SN breaks may got mixed.

Massey Harris and Ferguson became Massey Ferguson in 1958. Massey Harris and Ferguson were no longer made after 1957

BIG RUH, Correct. I also didn't realize that Massey Harris and Ferguson merged way back in 1953 until this topic got me to do some research.

It just means they didn't start making the MF-35 until sometime in 1960 and that is the s/n of the first one made in 1960. Since they were essentially the same tractor, they may have run out of decals before the transition, they wouldn't stop production waiting for a few more to be made, so they more than likely they just cracked open a new box for the MF-35.

That's kind of what I thought, but it's kinda neat to think that unit just happened to be in that transition period.

Where was the [ I think, if I remember right ]Massey Harris Ferguson in that line up? I remember seeing one at the Cedar Springs tractor show.

We had the same messy changeover in the UK, some early red grey tractors still carried the Ferguson front badge, other early MF 35s reverted back to gold chassis after a few years!
