Case 580 CK Wet Brakes

After reading this topic regarding repair of Case 580 CK brakes: www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?bd=crawlers&th=41152%25253E , I got hung up the the quote:

OK, I've got my prayer rugs all laid out, now give me the bad news, because the left side w/diff lock is wet with lubricant. I suppose to replace the seal you have to separate the tractor?

I have a 1970 or so 580 CK, the differential lock on mine is on the right side. I replaced the seal on the left side. That side has more room to work. It might be a similar job just more room on one side, don't know for sure.

The shaft the seal is on is splined part of the way then turns smooth with a grove at the transition from spline to smooth. Same or close shaft diameter all the way. To put the seal on the shaft without wrecking the seal I wraped one layer of one or two thousandth thick brass shim stock around the shaft and scotch taped it to hold it in place. That is what worked for me.

My 580Ck had wet brakes on both sides. Problem wasn't really the seals themselves. It was the loose shaft wobbling inside of them. Shimmed it up and took the play out of it and it's been fine since (with new brakes). If your's is loose, putting in new seals is a waste of time unless you tighten it up.

foret al lah..// use a couple qts of lucas hub seal in tranny oil ,, after a week of runnin it may solve your problem ,,,

Thanks for the replies. Spent some quality time last night with the manual to see what I was up against.

Without a tear-down to see what's really going on, it appears to me that the two seals between the splined differential shaft and the side gear on the right side are seeping. To access these seals, it seems that one, if not both axle gears need to be removed (and the axle housings with them), along with the bearing carrier. Then it's possible to withdraw the side gears.

Of course, if the side gear shafts are wobbly, then a complete set-up of the differential, adjusting shims for proper preload and backlash, is indicated.

Then I can do the repairs to the side gear seals and then the brakes.

None of this is a trivial undertaking, especially half-sheltered in a drafty shed. Might be I'll have to get used to no brakes until next summer.

Also, my TLB seems to have no parking brake, I can't even see a place where one was installed. Was it common for these tractors to have no means of holding a position without having to drop the stabilizers? Very annoying feature, if you could call it that...

Dang, still getting used to how this forum handles posts. It appears that I managed to reply to myself up above instead of at the end of the replies. I'll get the hang of this eventually.

This is not a bad job, I have done dozens. You have to work from the top and bottom. I have a 586c Forklift(same set-up) and I can easily do both sides in a day. Not near as bad as it looks.Just make sure you put the shims back like they were if you remove the side plates, they control the backlash on the ring and pinion.

I have a parts manual for 584-5-6 forklift which covers the basic tractor. May be the same as yours. email open
