bayonet revisited

A little over a week ago I posted how I had found an old bayonet in the attic of a house I was working at. Tonight I got back there and measured it some. The inside of the socket is 3/4" in diameter, overall length is just short of 21", and on the flat spot at the base of the blade it is stamped US with the letter S underneath it. Any more help Tony Mass or A Scheele or whoever knows would be appreciated.

Hey Greg, the dimensions you gave match mine exactly, as do the markings. Ive done some research on the Springfield model 1873 .45-70 that my bayonet came with, and according to everything ive found, it is the correct bayonet for the gun. My gun was made in 1875. Id be willing to bet that your bayonet is for a trapdoor Springfield rifle. From the pictures you posted, it looks identical, and your measurements back that up. Did you tell the homeowner about it? and if so, what did they say?

Here is two photos of my 1884 45-70 and bayonet. Sound like they changed over the years.

Wow, yeah they did Wheat Farmer. Mine looks very similar as far as the gun goes, but the bayonet is completely different. I actually fired mine for the first time since ive owned it, and since my grandpa found it in his aunts attic 60 some years ago. found some black powder loads at a gun show in Springfield Il. (coincidence?), and the 138 year old gun shoots great.

Yep, not for Wheatfarmer's ramrod model tho... exact dim's are -20.87"overall length, blade 18" long, socket inner diameter 0.75, socket length 2.94".
