Need some help with a diesel tractor

Hi all,

I hope someone can help me out here...also posted in the MH forum...

Having some trouble out of a Massey Harris 44D. To start it just had a full motor rebuild, rebuilt head, rebuilt injectors, new fuel filters...  Basically the works... The problem is it's having a terrible time starting. I will kill batteries faster than they can charge trying to start it. You have to pull it several hundred yards before it tries to run. Seems to be getting enough fuel. Will pour out of the exhaust when pulling off. When it does run it never clears up. Constantly blowing a dark grey smoke... Blacks up under a load, but never goes away.

I have checked the timing on the pump and it's good. Sprays fuel when bleeding of the lines so I guess the pump is producing the correct pressure... Can't find the pressure for an American Bosch PSB pump so I don't know what pressure I should read at the pump.

Any thoughts on what my problem is?? And can anyone tell me the pressure I should have? I'm afraid the pump is shot........

Thanks for any help

Take an injector out and hook it up outside the cyl. head and see if it sprays properly (a fog when it sprays) This is a down and dirty way to check if pump is putting out enough pressure. Note: do not bend injector lines to do this.... just try different orientations of line,or injector. Follow up would be great!
Good Luck,
Andy

Are you sure pump is in time, PSB pump turns engine speed, hydraulic head half speed like engine camshaft. With 1 & 4 at TDC and #4 valves rocking the hydraulic head gear marked tooth must be in window opening to fire #1. If not, then pump needs one turn to correct it. Have also seen the head gear drive clip break when plunger is stuck which throws timing off internally, and all marks will be right. Happened on a 33, only way to find it is pull the head.

Thanks for the help..... Will be a few days before I get a chance to work on it again. I guess I will go over the pump again and double check everything.

Thanks again
