Update on my issue with my WD.

Went out tonight to look at the WD. Pulled the battery cables and they were a corroded mess underneath. So cleaned both parts up well and re-assembled. Tried to crank the tractor over but the starter just "spins" (you can hear it coast down once you let go). It's like it doesn't 'engage' anything internally when you pull the starter rod from the seat.

So next I guess I will pull the starter, but it'll be a bit before I have time to do that. Anything special I need to do to remove the starter and anything I should check while I'm in there? I can see if there are any starter, ring gear or flywheel teeth issues by just removing the starter, right? Never been into this one before.

Try turning the engine over a bit by hand be it from the crank hand crank hook up or with the fan belt and fan if the belt is good and tight. Doing that will tell you if it is a bad spot on the ring gear. Also if the battery is weak that will happen

Hmmm. Well I did spin the tractor over slowly with the crank to make sure everything was "good" before trying to crank it, but I didn't try to stop it at different spots to see if there was ring gear damage. May try that as well as putting the battery on a charger to see if it was pulled down from not getting charged well due to all the corrosion (or if it won't take a charge anymore).

Your starter drive is going bad. If you hit it enough times, it may catch and start. It may do that for awhile, but it never gets any better. Better take the starter off and look for a new drive or another starter.

Well, thanks for the help guys. I will report back once I actually take the starter off and investigate further.

Where is this flywheel inspection port though? Do I need to remove a cover to get to it?
