JD 3010 vs. MF 165

My buddy and I redid a JD 3010 gas. Fresh paint, engine rebuild, cleaned it up nice with new seat and lights and what not, rear rubber is about 85%. Not a show tractor, but it looks nice. Through this same buddy, a MF 165 diesel that he does maintenance on has come up for sale for $4000 or best offer. Its a 3 speed hi low. Nice, straight tractor with decent rubber, original paint that is alright. We use the 3010 for raking and tedding, and a little grain drill work, and snow removal at my place in the winter. With all the knowledge and experience on this site, I figured I could get some good opinions when comparing the two tractors I have never really drove a Massey, mainly Deere's and Deutzs.

A 165 diesel vs a gas anything? No contest! The 165 diesel had the best fuel economy in it's class and is probably the 2nd best selling MF tractor behind the 135. The fuel savings alone would justify the diesel but the 165 happens to be a fantastic tractor with a good reputation and parts support.

I fully agree with stickwelding! Ran a chopper on one for 9 years, done all our ploughing, and tilling, the only thing ever replaced in those 9000 odd hours was the brakes!

I'd take the Massey over the gas 3010 if you plan to actually do anything with it. I've got a couple of gas tractors in the 45+ HP category. They will break you putting fuel in them compared to the diesels.

Can't speak for the Massey or for the gas version of the 3010,but I had a 3010 diesel. One of the top three worst tractors I've ever been cursed with.

To me Deere killed themselves when thay came out with the new generation tractors and the 3010 is one of them. Would not own one. And I am vice president of the local 2 cylinder club so that tells you I like Deeres, just not the ones after the 2 cylinder models.

The Massey being a diesel would be a big advantage but the only advantage. Park both tractors next to each other, I think you'll find the Deere much heavier built. If the you feel the Massey is heavy enough, OK. Next drive the Massey some, decide which you feel is more comfortable to operate.
I know a couple of people with 3010 diesels that have run them hard and still have them and like them. I have a 3020 diesel and a 165 gas here. I farm with the 3020 but plan to fix up and sell the 165.
In the end the choice is yours, but I feel it would be more of a sideways move rather than a step up.

IF JD hadn't come out with New Generation tractors then JD would have ended up being bought out such as the rest of the tractor manufacturers of that era. Most other tractor owners don't agree with you about New Generation tractor VALUES or the New Generation tractors would bring the high $$$$$$$$$$$ that they bring today.

Two different tractors intended for different applications.
The 3010 not only being a gasser with an orphan Waterloo four cylinder. It's also a 1st generation brand new design with teething problems.
The Massey is a proven de-bugged 2nd generation.

Thanks for all the input. I have always liked the new generation platform. Just don"t like all the gas the 3010 drinks. Plus I believe the 3010 has some value to it while it looks good yet. I will check out the 165 later this week, and get a better idea. Maybe it won"t be what I am looking for. I am only the 2nd owner of the 3010. A bigger farm I help out at, gave me a great deal to get it out of the way. It was rough when we got it. After lots of hours, it looks good and runs pretty well. Thanks again for all the input. This place never fails.
