I planted some watermelon for the grandkids this spring. Best watermelon I ever grew. Now there are at least a half dozen very nice ones in the patch yet. How can I keep them for say 2 weeks? Thanks in advance. J.

Don't tell anyone where your patch is would be a good idea. The oldtimers would put certain vegs in a oat bin and eat at a later date. Not sure how long later is I guess it depends on how cold it gets. Deer like ripe melon they will paw a hole in the side then eat it.

I bought one for brother in law several weeks ago. It sat in the garage for 3 or 4 weeks before he picked it up. He told me yesterday it was really good, one of the best he has eaten this season. They will keep a long time if half way cool.

There was an article in Farm & Ranch magazine on keeping watermelons. It said to put them in the hayloft buried in the hay. The gas given off from the hay will keep the oxygen away and preserve the melon for Thanksgiving! I never tried it but heard about it since then. I would love to do that.

When we moved to Wisconsin some of the old timers would tell us about storing watermelons, they'd usually eat the last one for Christmas or New Year's.

When I was a youngster in Illinois, Dad brought a load of melons from the Sandridge near Winchester. He laid 6" of wheat straw, on the ground, next to the driveway fence, and piled the melons on that, then covered them with the rest of the bale, and threw an old canvas tarp over the pile. We had melons, way late in the fall, even tho us 6 kids would eat a lot of melon.
