A local new Holland dealer took a 2005 Harley
Davidson sportster 883 with 5000 miles in on trade on a tractor. It's a stock bike,no sattle bags or extras that I can see. He's asking 4000 for it.Anyone know the market on these?

4 grand is a bit high for that Sportster unless you want to hang on to it for a long while. All stock 883 bike with that many miles, $3200 TOPS.

Thats the going price on them, you could maybe get $5000 in the spring, but 10 year old Softails and Roadkings are only bringing about $7000,Great little bikes for short trips or in town.

A little high priced & it is not a bike for GUYS it is a GIRLS bike. I am a die hard Harley guy that has been riding Harleys since I was 15 & I am 59 now but if all I had to ride was a Sportster I'd rather push a Honda. Gerald

Just thought you Harley guys might like a look at this old boy......Seen it at Portland this year.

Running your mouth about it being a girls bike might leave you with less teeth, in some circles. Maybe you are not as cool as you think gmc? I might take a little razzing in the club, but they can't leave me in the dust. Oh and no one showes up on a honda.

He'll get 4 grand for it in the spring, maybe more.

I have an older ('93) Sportster that my wife used to ride. It is quite unpleasant to ride; very stiff-sprung and lots of vibration. An hour ride is very long on the Sportster, while I can ride my Triumph Tiger all day long. The 2005 Sportster has a rubber-mounted engine to deal with the vibration, but I don't think much has been done to improve the Sportster's primitive suspension. Aside from that, the Sportster has the characteristics beloved by Harley owners: It's both overweight and underpowered.

$4,000 is priced right. Rubber mount started in '04. Sportsters are fine cycles. No useless timber. They are not designed for touring, but they'll sure get you there.

Emissions requirements pretty well choke production Harleys, but a little tinkering & they come around. My '06 Road King'll eat a 1500 Gold Wing's lunch any day of the week.

883. The "Piglet". One of my buddies has one. We put drags on it, rejetted it, new cam. On the take off that little piglet will leave my stroker Shovel or Pan in the dust. Oh, I'll run him down all right, but on the take off, he's got me. He's really got me taking off on my Ultra. $4,000 you say? If its in good shape, as far as I'm concerned, worth it. My limit on an Iron Head is $4,000 and you're looking at a Block Head. If in good shape, worth it for sure. But then again, it's your money, not mine. Question is, is it worth it to you? You gonna buy it to ride or to look at or resell? One things for sure about a Harley, you can rebuild them, rebuild them, rebuild them, and rebuild them, and then you can rebuild them.

Personally, I could care less what people ride or what color your tractors are. Ride what you can offord and like, and gets the job done. Keep the wind in your face, your mind in the right frame, and don't worry much about trying to impress anyone that doesn't put the food in your mouth, the money in your wallet, or the roof over your head.

4 grand is a bit high but only 5 thousand miles?thats not a lot of miles. The hot set up with those is to punch it out to 1200 and install the weisco light weight pistons the balance is the same and it turns the little bike into a real sleeper

I couldn"t have said it any better than you just did. I ride a Harley but I agree 100% it doesn"t matter what color of tractor or what make of bike as long as your happy.

The price is a little high. Wait until the middle of whinter and you can buy the same bike for $3000 from a private seller only with some add ons.

Low mileage Harleys are a dime a dozen. Lots of people watch American Chopper and think they have to buy one. 5-10 years later they realize they only ride it a couple weekends a year and it is parked the rest of the time. Look at your local Craigs list and you'll see loads of them. The best thing about Harley is their marketing, the product is so so at best.

With that mileage it is probably worth 4000 at the high end. I have never ridden an 883 evo only the first pre 1972 known as 900s but actually 883 also. I have been told they do not go like the old ones by a guy who had both.Any Sportster is not comfy for long rides. Many 883 get punched out to 1200 which is nice because you have the tank badges of 883 and the get up and go of a much faster bike. Good sleepers. For 4000 it must be immaculate with no rust or defects. Spoke wheels are worth a bit more.

The four cams of a Sportster was always way superior for racing than any shovel or big twin.Whatever you got I have a Sportster to beat it.

For that kind of money I'd consider looking at a newer used Japanese bike, either 2 cylinder or 4 cylinder. The Japanese bikes depreciate much faster than Harleys because of Harley's excellent marketing, similar to John Deere's marketing.

I like older Suzukies, a 1980's GS1100 4 cyl runs $800 to $1500 depending on the time of year. Add $250 to overhaul the carbs, another $250 for new tires and change the brake fluid and you have a very nice bike. They are lighter, faster, quieter and more comfortable than the Harleys I've test driven and they cost less than half as much as a similar Harley.

Your opinions may be much different depending on what you are looking for. I'm one of the few people who likes American cars, American pickups and Japanese mototcycles. Other people always tell me they are the worst of both worlds.

That's funny, I show up on my Honda V65 Magna all the time and the older generation know's better than to tangle with it. Occasionally you get some young idiot's that don't know anything about that get their a$$es handed to them! Makes me lmao!

Rob, my beef was with GMC calling it a girls bike. Remember the post was about Harleys? so lets not compare apples and oranges. I'll beat more fat guys on a big Harley as I'll lose to with the little sportster. Would I run it against a V-65, no. I had a V-30 in high school. Our club is a Harley club, so no one rides in on a honda.
