No replies to my question over on the Massey part of the forum re: head gasket availability yet. I got the fuel tank off this afternoon and down to the valve cover. Needs a little more clean up before I remove the cover but I suspect I am going to find a stuck exhaust valve. Its hard starting, smoky, no power and a definite miss . I have heard these Perkins 300 diesels had a tendency for head gasket failure. Hoping not this one.

Had to replace my head gasket on a 1973 135 3 cyl perkins a few months ago would have sworn it was a stuck or burnt valve. turns out the read gasket blew between 1 and 2 cly
from what i've read in the forms here and else where its a common problem on perkins diesels
head gasket cost me 12.00 and a rocker gasket was around 8.00 if i remember correctly took my local dealer 2 days to get the gaskets and a few hours to replace
make sure you check your block and head with a stiaght edge and a feeler gauge for trueness
torgue is 65 ft pounds for the head bolts i think
and re torque after 20-30 hrs hrs
i should have changed the valve seals as well while i was there but didn't
found all caskets and seals n valve are avalible right here off of this site at least for mine
good luck and let us know what you find out on yours

From what I am finding , the parts for the smaller Perkins engine are more common to find. This 300 Perkins must have been less popular. I find that number 4 is the missing cylinder by loosening the injector lines as it idles. Hope to open the valve cover tomorrow.

If you don't find anything, I just might be able to do something for you here in the UK. My email is open......

I find this tractor hard to work on. Can't even get the valve cover off without draining and removing the fuel tank. Can't get the fuel tank off without removing the steering shaft. Re-torqueing head bolts after 20 some hours would be a big job.

Valve cover is off and everything looks ok. Valves open and close as they should. Only thing I noticed was that there seems to be zero clearance on the tappets. The I&T shop manual calls for 12 thousandths cold. I doubt that is the source of my problem though as it has been running fine this way for the past 15 years or so.
